I finally had the Best Buy Geek Squad out to install a home network for our 4 pc's using our cable modem and now I am experiencing frequent disconnects...it's making me crazy! It happens when I am the only one online and the other pcs are off so I know it isn't any kind of signal dilution or whatever you call it...

When uploading images to Vendio, i select 15 images to upload, click "upload" and often the screen just sits there. I click "refresh" and the selection is gone and I have to start again! GRRRRRRRRRR

Sometimes when I list, i schedule the listing and then actually have to sign in to VEndio again..only to find that the earlier one had launched and then I have duplicate listings!

Has any one else had similar experiencees with wireless networks? THe Geek Squad suggested it was my cable provider but when I bypass the wireless router and connect my pc directly to cable modem I have no problem.

I believe that it's the nature of the wireless router. If the computers are all very close to each other it may be alright but when they are in different areas of the home they sometimes have problems. I'm waiting fo the wireless router technology to get better before I abandon my wired router setup that works perfectly.

I have a hybird network in my house, and am quite happy with it. There are limitations in a wireless environement: interference from other wireless devices, obstructions, etc.

There are sites that will provide you with a different ROM flash firmware for many transmitters that will enable a higher transmission wattage. These are used in other countries, and are not FCC approved, but they do work...

A lot also depends on the protocol you have chosen. The common 802.11b is cheap, but lives in a crowded frequency range. It may be susceptible to interference. The 802.11a protocol is in a higher frequency range, and has a potentially higher transfer rate, but it has a very limited range. The newest 802.11g protocol has a higher transfer rate, but it does share the same frequency range as the 802.11b devices.

I am using the 802.11b protocol in addition to my wired network. Having a wired network also allows me to install additional wireless access points where necessary. This hybrid arrangement gives me the best of both worlds.

I just went through 4 weeks of hell with my cable provider. We've had this service for about 6 months and use a router for the upstairs computer.

Make a long story short, the connection kept getting slower and slower (I did a check and it was slower than dial up so that's when we finally had had enough)

It took forever for pages to load and had to always hit refresh.

The cable company replaced all our wires, even from the pole. Turns out it was the router that was causing the problems. After we discounected it, it worked fine.

Also other items on the 2.4GHz Frequency can cause problems. Your wirelss phone, your neighbors wireless phone, your neighbors wireless network. Also the router can be a problem. What kind of signal strength are getting.

just got back from Best Buy - decided since everything else seemed ok that it must be the router...so far so good. It's a 802.11b wireless b network...i also disconnected a high intensity lamp that was situated right next to the router..will keep you posted.

The cable companies hate routers and will not help you with them at all ( I don't blame them ). Routers can go out too since they are always in use. Routers can be tricky and a real pain but when they work it's s pleasure to have several computers always free to use.

My attbi account just switched over to Bresnan, and I've been getting disconnected a bunch! Wish they'd iron out whatever their problems are. It's definitely slower, too. Add to that the constant downtimes from the road construction and, whew!

No help here, just sympathy

My AT&T provider mailed everyone a new power supply for the cable modem as that was identified as a source of problems for many of the glitches.

Well it WAS a defective router and now everything is working great!! I don't even notice any speed issues when multiple users are on-line. I LOVE MY WIRELESS NETWORK!! I am even tempted to get a lap-top so I can do my listings on the patio!! BestBuy installed the network for $149 and that's one of the best investments I've made - wonderful support!! Actually, the speed has improved once I removed all the nasty spy-ware by using SpyBot at the tech's suggestion. I am a happy camper!

We have a wireless network through our cable company and it's connected to three computers in different areas of the house using three different OS's. Since one is XP, the network had to be configured on the XP. We've had it almost 1 year now and never a single problem except when the provider's network goes down. Glad you figured out what the problem was. Once you have cable, it will be almost impossible to go back.

I have dialup here at work and it drives me crazy!

I've had cable on the desktop in my home office (AKA "THE PIT" for years...used the free MSN dial-up that came with another pc for the others and I know what you mean about SLOW! We ( I have 2 teenagers and a husband who likes to read Swiss newspapers online) fought over time on cable PC and finally I decided to take the plunge and have someone else install the network...my family harmony is restored (HA! HA! I WISH!)
