What is this? No markings except for a number on the bottom.

When I do a close up of one side of the bottom, Weirdly, I see this below. Really can't see it with the naked eye

If it's a newer item it may be from Vietnam. The west coast ports are full of containers from Vietnam these days and a lot of it is pottery.

It may be a planter.

Hi Paloma,

How big is it?

My son's fiance collects raised-trunk elephant stuff. She'd probably like it.

THe elephant is about 10 inches tall, from tail to truck around 11 inches and from one side to the other about 5 inches. Sure wish I knew something about this guy. Don't think he's new. He has alot of crazing of glaze inside only.

this usually come in a pair, you see a lot of them in chinatowns in san fran, chicago, los angelos, etc
it could be from hk,taiwan, china, the black design in the centre is a chinese longevity sign.
they dont usually come marked, like the mudman figurines, they are crudely made.

The "crazing" in the photos looks deliberately done. Not at all unusual. They crackle the glaze quite often in newer pieces to give it an old look. It's cute and would be great for elephant collectors, but IMO it's not old. Vintage maybe?

We used to import ceramic elephant stools of a larger size but similar style. They are made by a Vietnamese group living in Thailand.

Hi all,

Paloma, are you going to list it?

I'm curious about the weight, as in shipping cost.

Thanks,

Lucy

Hi Lucy, Don't know how much it weights exactly. I guess I need to get a scale. HUMMM I think I know someone with a shipping scale. My guess is around 4 -5 lbs I'll need to check it out

See a large number of similar ones on the west coast now. I have a drooping trunk one in a much larger size with a flat top that I used as a plant stand. Originally it was one of a pair and could be used if one purchased the pair as a coffee table by placing a sheet of glass between the two. Mine came from Vietnam in the late 1970's. The ones I see now come out of China and Vietnam and come in various sizes for different purposes depending on what sort of top they have. I have seen them in "Big Lots" formally "Pic and Save"

Lucy, I was able to weigh the elephant. It weighs 4.8 lbs. Looks like I am going to need a big box with lots of bubble wrap and peanuts

Hi all,

Stanleymu, that's an interesting lot! I've seen the wall hangings before. Some of them are simply wonderful, all beaded, etc.

Paloma, that's pretty heavy. Shipping FedEx Ground would prolly run around $8.00 not counting your packing charge, if you have one. Maybe too much considering the value of the piece...
