I have had some problems with buyers saying that what I call "books" are really magazines. I sell craft books and magazines. Just what is a book and what is a magazine? Does a book always have a stiff cover? I was going by the fact that magazines had advertising in them, maybe that's wrong. I want to be accurate in my descriptions, "book" is so much shorter for the title that "magazine". In just the last 2 days I have had people trying to buy a certain sweater from the books, even though they are listed under "knitting patterns" and I clearly state more than once that it is a book.

a magazine is a periodical that is issued at regular intervals. Books can be softcover. How about calling it a craft "guide". or soft cover pattern book, instruction/pattern book. To me those are all fine.

I think what you are calling books are really leaflets. Maybe you could say paper craft books so that your buyers don't think they are hard cover. If you show pictures then the buyer must know what they are. My idea of a craft magazine is soft cover, many designs with patterns and advertising that tells you where you can get supplies. Leaflets are just designs with instructions. I think leasure arts calls them leaflets.

IMHO; these sound like catalogs, Are they from a specic company or are they from many different sources (in the same "booklet"? Do they have prices? You didn't say how big these are.

No, I really don't think they are catalogues. They may have up to 150 pages, and are just knitting, and or crochet, and or sewing patterns. The ones with advertising I call magazines. If they just have say less than 20 pages, I call them booklets, if less that 10, leaflets. Am I wrong in thinking that anything with pages bound in a cover is technically a book? There are just different categories of books?

If they have advertising I would call them magazines. Otherwise I would call them books, and be sure to specify they have soft covers and how many pages.

Books can come in all shapes and sizes. I think as long as it has a somewhat stiff cover it could be a book... after all... is a coloring book not a book?

If the cover is made of the same material as the pages, then I would probably go with booklet. So I would call it a pattern book or pattern booklet.

I agree with the others. If they come in regular intervals they are magazines: 6 per year etc. Otherwise they are softcover books or leaflets.

BTW, I love crochet and buy lots of pattern books on Ebay. I would love to look over what you have listed if you want to send me an email at [email protected]
