must be a gambit to get more double category listings revenue by restricting the jumping of categories a bit.

Wait. I know its late and I am tired tonight, but did I click on the right thing?
How does that effect the double catagory listing?

"The second part of this phase of the project eliminates the ability to sign in to eBay using an email address if a non-email-based User ID exists"

I cant even figure out what that means?

(didnt think you could have a user id without an email address??)

The point is that ebay is going to treat the moving of categories the same exact way it now treats the auction descriptions. If a bid has been made the item category will be locked. That will affect a lot of sellers that currently move an item from category to category during it's listing duration. Many of these sellers may feel the need to simply double list the item and thus increase ebay's revenue.

Tessa,

Ebay tried like the devil to get ebayers ( especially the sellers ) to abandon the email as an ebay ID several years ago. Ebay now has a trumped up reason ( Weapons of Mass Destruction? / Spoof emails? ) to force the change. Since users log in with your ebay ID they will make that a no-no to use an email address to force the inactive accounts to adopt the change.
The point is that ebay is working VERY hard to get rid of the correspondence between the sellers and the buyers. A 'Question and Answer' setup is certainly on the drawing board where all exchanges between the sellers and buyers will go through a Big Brother eBay public posting ( similar to Yahoo or ioffer ). Ebay is going to squeeze every dime it can out of its venue.

ACE,
Okay, now I get what you mean, and the implication of it all. It makes sense they would try to cut off in the bud any outside transactions and the best way for them to do that is not reveal sellers email adress in an auction.
(Finally got a good nites sleep last night! The brain works again!!!)

Meg has promised either $3 or $5 billion in revenue by 2005 ( I don't remember which figure). They will leave no stone or your fees unturned to reach that figure.

That's why Meg gets the big bucks. Many of the other auction sites saw the need to eliminate the email addresses and did so a long time ago. Ebay was making lots of money and let a lot of money slip away. Meg has made those promises of increased revenues and ebay is starting to squeeze the sponge a little tighter.
