Hi - I am getting more and more of these "pop-up" messages on my computer. I will leave my computer for a while and when I come back I have "layers" of them. I think I've even gotten a pop-up about getting rid of the pop-ups, but I don't read or trust them. What is the suggested way to make these things go away!? Thanks!

I just found Zonealarm.com. They have a free download. The zone Alarm that is free is called the basic. I love it...no more pop-ups!

Are these the ones that look like window alerts? They are annoying. I have Windows XP, and I found a way to stop them and it works 100% - If you have Windows XP and these are the types of messages, let me know and I will research the link on how to do this.

I was getting them two,I have window xp. They are a PAIN as you can not click them off.
I downloaded zonealarm and it has helped, but the other day I got 4 of them with in 5 min's of turning my computer on.
I have had nothing in the last day or two, so maybe I fixed it by playing with zonealarm.
Thanks for posting, as I thought maybe it was just me and my system, all I know is how to turn it on and off. !!!!
Thank you !!!!!

http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/

In their initial state, Microsoft Windows operating systems (98, ME, XP, 2000, NT) allow anyone on the internet to pop up Windows on your screen. There is no need for them to know anything about your computer and your computer does not care who does it.

These pop ups (the ones that look like windows message boxes) may be stopped by disabling the Messenger service.

For XP...(other programs can be found on the link above.

Click Start >Settings->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-Click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

BTW...Googles new toolbar includes an excellent popup blocker for the other type ads.

I have just started using Opera for a browser after reading about it in a previous thread. I am very impressed. It handles popups beautifully. I have not had a single uninvited popup for a week now. And the bonus is that unlike some popup killers, the built in one in Opera lets you look at popups that are part of a website. Also I have noticed that I am not getting any adware or spyware on computer since I started using Opera.
Regards,
Adrian

Annie,
are they grey in color and make a musical tone when U zap them?
I was also getting layers of these, and yes, some were pop-ups advertising pop-up killers. I went on vacation for 4 days and the computer was turned off for 4 days. I have gotten substantially less of these by having the computer off for those 4 days....
