Am I the only one who's sick of these cutesy locations? On auctions that are large/heavy and/or don't specify fixed shipping charges it would be real helpful if ebay forced sellers to provide a **real** location not Discounts, USA, Good Luck Bidding, etc

Sheesh.

I agree! I think those sellers lose out on bids, though. I have had many people who say they bought from me because I was close to them (so they knew shipping would be a little faster), or "a fellow Wisconsinite", any number of reasons. I also tend to use the "search for items close to you" for the shipping reason. If I need it in a few days and there's someone that lives closer to me I'll buy it from them (if they ship daily).

Tech,

I used to do that because
a) I felt potential browser do not need to know my exact location.
b) because I didnt want people who I bought from or buy from looking up my auctions to see what I was reselling it at.

But then I realized it wasn't fair to buyers to not at least disclose location by region. But if you put a fixed shipping price in your auction should it matter? (provided your not doing p/u's in your local area?)

I think there is some value to the seller (and Im not sure exactly where it lies -- competition, maybe) in not putting your exact location.

If a seller is in Hawaii or Alaska and selling auction goods that must go Media Mail then it matters.
Ebay should have mandatory state locations at a minimum.

neroter -

Not for fixed shipping, no. But any auction that has a "will specifiy charges later" etc.

Even just a state name would suffice; I just want to know if I'm paying for freight from NY or AZ.

Yeah, I agree, Tech. Bidding on anything with the 'shipping specified later' you asking for it to bite you in the arse EOA. (One or two buys happen like that, and you figure that one out real fast, though!

Cutesy sellers or sellers that make a book out of their description are usually novice sellers. I stay away from them.

And sellers who spend 3 full pages of rolling prose and graphics telling you terms of the auction and about themselves . . . and a single solitary line, buried somewhere, describing the item for sale, with no mention of condition, size etc.

I think a Pet Peeves thread is in the works LOL

You just KNEW I was gonna jump in on this one. I have been saying that over and over and over,,,, We want to see a STATE for the location of the buyers and sellers. UNITED STATES has No Value! New York, San diego, Boston, Houston, Seattle,,,,NOME Alaska, Hawaii,Geogia,Baltimore, Syaracuse, Kansas, Alabama, Los Angeles, Twentynine Palms, Palm Springs,Detroit, Missouri,Grand Rapids,Long Beach, Cal. Portland,Oregon. Portland, Maine. Not too mention but I will Canada! All their provinces. Think about that, you see some thing you like and the seller is in CANADA,,,,,where? in Canada? West coast? East coast? E bay is way to big for the Country name. This IS the WWW....treat it as such.

Glad I did'nt start this thread and REALLY glad to tech did! You give e'm Hell Harry!

I always place my Zip Code in the location on all my auctions. I too Wish it were mandatory. Some of these sellers need a stupid sign hung around their neck.

bigpeepa,
Novice sellers are the best places to get good prices because they usually dont know what to ask for said item! And they havent yet caught onto padding shipping (some anyway)

There is no way in hell I will be putting my zip code or even city in my auctions. I used to have the city I lived in. I would inevitable get 4-5 emails a week from different perspective bidders anting to know if they could pick the item up if they won who would then turn flat out nasty when I said no. They are now lucky to find out what region I am in. SInce all of my shipping costs are laid out as a flat fee in my auctions they really shouldn't care.

neroer2,I feel buying from a novice is like shooting craps, ya never know what numbers will come up. From looking at the "what is this" photos on this board there are sure a lot of novice sellers around in the antique, jewelry and collectible business. You are right, novice sellers are a good place to get a buy from time to time but they are also a good place to get burnt. I don't buy much on Ebay but I have bought a few things from red star sellers and never got burnt plus I made a few bucks selling the items. I have also sold tons of stuff to red star dealers and have never got burnt. They must also make a few bucks because a lot come back for more. That's just my 3 cent piece. Good luck looking for home runs I hope you hit a couple bases loaded ones. You can probably tell I am bored. I should be listing looking for a base hit LOL.

Big,
Can certainly see the truth in some of your statements, but to me, buying on ebay at all -- is a crap shoot.

A woman I know who owns an antique store was telling me about this other guy (who was also in antiques) and was KNOWINGLY was selling fake LIMOGENS sp*? on ebay and getting away with it until she turned him in. So burnt is burnt big or small ya know??

(I am listing on and off too. Get terribly bored with the process after awhile!

Big - if you want to find some bargains - go to Yahoo. I've been picking up stuff there for about a month now that I list on ebay as soon as it arrives and get about double what I paid for on it. Lots of seelers there, very few bidders.

I have my zip code in the description box. Remember we were all novices at one time. O feedback, shades. I will meet someone if they win an auction. Why, because it saves them money and they are sure to return to see what else you are selling. I don't have to go out of my way to hit a McDonalds on I 94 so that is where I meet them. Never say never

As with everything on Ebay, it depends on how you do it. I have a cutsey name for the city, but my state is listed and I sell books, so I list my shipping charges, including for multiple wins.

If shipping charges are clearly stated, I don't care if location is even listed. If it states exact shipping charges I would like state & Zip Code. If the state is next door, I don't worry about the shipping, but the further away it is, I might want to look up the charges.

If it says shipping to be determined later, it doesn't matter, because I have to write the seller anyway, just to be sure I'm not going to get stuck with an outrageous shipping charge at the end. (Unless it's something I desperately need, these usually fall under the don't bid on it category.)

Not Dragonfyree On Ebay.

What if you want a book for little Billy's bday gift and the seller says s/h say $3.25 for Media Mail but there is no mention that the seller is in Alaska or Hawaii? The bday is 2 weeks away and plenty of time to get to you. Wrong, the package could take up to 30 days for an east coaster to get that package.
