I am curious to know what everyone uses for shipping. I am shipping several items overseas and some of the costs using USPS for a 6lbs item can be around $25.00 or more!!! Domestic is pretty reasonable around $6.50+. Any suggestions?

You're probably better off with fedex or airborne, DHL or one of those for overseas.

USPS Airmail is usually 1/3 the price of anyone else. The problem is that there is no tracking available.
You can also use USPS EMS which does have tracking and is usually cheaper than any other carrier also but mush more than airmail or surface mail.

For domestic, it depends on the weight. For 6 Lbs, I would only use Fedex Ground unless it is going to Alaska or Hawaii. If it is worth a few hundred dollars, I would still use Fedex ground to Alaska and Hawaii though. (much cheaper insurance)

For shipments out of USA, USPS is the cheapest. FedEx & UPS will add a surcharge that will be as much as the PO charges. A pkg weighing 6# in the USA, FedEx Ground is the best.

USPS may be the cheapest, but for international shipping I always feel more secure with the private carriers. They have a better reliablity and service rate, I think.

Coincidence. I just got off the phone with the USPS. I have to ship something 3.5 lbs to Australia, fits in a priority mail box. Put it in USPS, UPS, FedEx. Yikes, UPS and FedEx is quoting $100.00 or more. USPS says the cheapest rate is:
Airmail Letter Post 4 - 7 Days $25.90
Airmail Parcel Post 4 - 10 Days $26.75
Economy (Surface) Letter Post 4 - 6 Weeks $11.45
Economy (Surface) Parcel Post 4 - 6 Weeks $21.50

Cheapest is the Economy Surface Letter Post. BUT it is not a letter although it qualifies for the size limitation. Sure enough the guy at the PO said it qualifies for that as long as it is under 4 lbs.

The terminology slays me....letter post.

I almost always ship overseas using airmail letter post. Haven't (knock on wood) had a problem yet, and it's generally the best value.

The best value is to put 4 Lbs in a flat rate Global Priority envelope.
