You are going to love this one. While doind a little curiosity surfing of ebay tonight I found an interesting little trend. Althoug there are tons of listings for Marine and Navy rings, when clicked on they all seem to now be invalid and accopanied by this little note....

Dear User:
Unfortunately, access to this particular category or item has been blocked due to legal restrictions in your home country. Based on our discussions with concerned government agencies and eBay community members, we have taken these steps to reduce the chance of inappropriate items being displayed. Regrettably, in some cases this policy may prevent users from accessing items that do not violate the law. At this time, we are working on less restrictive alternatives. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we hope you may find other items of interest on eBay.
Thank You.

Am I the only person absolutly amused that "government agencies" are having auctions for mens costume jewelry shut down? The $100 and more rings are still running, it's all the under $30 rings that have been shut down. Guess they are only concerned with low budget potential terrorists

While they are at it, why don't they restrict: umbrellas, scarves (you can strangle someone with them), perfume, anything glass. . .heck just shut all of Ebay down. It's a terrorist network don't you know? You have to be particularly leary of us sellers. We can be a real terror when our bidders don't pay.

Are you U.S. based? I was looking at some for 30.00-range Navy rings and didn't have this happen.

Nothing in what you posted supports an anti-terrorism reason. Could these just be caught in the net of not selling U.S. issue stuff?

The rings could be used as part of a terrorist disguise. A disguise is a package, right clothes, (which might be a fake US service uniform) along with the correct watch, haircut, speech pattern, military mannerisms, and of course a ring fake or real. One from a military service acadamy would be the best, this coupled with a fake ID could get the terrorist into a power plant, military base, airplane cockpit, various government buildings or just about any place else he or she wanted to go.
It all seems like overkill paranoia until the terrorist detonates a bomb.

D - yes I am US based and in a search I just did there were at least 10 iems in the first page of Navy Ring items that come up as invalid, it is a much higher percentage under marines.

All - That theory holds no water since the less realistic the ring, themore likely it seems to be that it is now invalid. In fact, the signet rings and hig end rings have been left to close. It's the obvious imitations that cn be had whlesale on a number of websites for under $5 that have been shut down. Besides, I don't think any one has ever been stopped at the gates of a military base because they didn't have the right ring. And they certainly were not allowed passage onto a base because they had no ID but a did have a great ring. It is overkill, and considering the scope of the products they are shutting down, it's silly too. How does one justify that I can't purchase a cheap imitation ring on ebay but can walk into any Military Surplus store in the country, including withing walking distance of me right now, and buy a uniform, have dog tags made, etc.

I wonder if it has anything to do with this news story?

http://tinyurl.com/jrne

"Attempts to acquire official identification, uniforms or vehicles would be consistent with the tactics and techniques of al-Qaeda and other extremist groups," it said in the bulletin distributed to police agencies and private firms that could be affected.

"Terrorist groups have utilized police or military uniforms to mask their identities and achieve closer access to their targets without arousing suspicion," it said.

It makes no sense that low cost rings would be banned and higher end rings allowed to stay. Attorney General John Ashcroft is a bit goofy though.

I am at a trade show in Las Vegas right now and am amazed at the number of military booths and the "official looking" equipment that they have. We stopped at one of them to look at some night vision and telescoping equipment and when inquiring about the price they were surprised that we would buy more than 1. Apparently they are used to selling this stuff to individuals. There's everything from equipment to uniforms and weapons.

We must have seen at least 10 booths with just that type of item.

What were you using for search/category?

I must be looking in the wrong place; I just searched on navy insignia ring and found a 4.95 one (four days to go on a ten day listing).

I suspect there is some reason these are being yanked because something else must fit category/item type, not because they are cheap rings.

Easier for eBay to sweep all and let sellers appeal individually.

ring, navy, -blue

Like I said there are rings there, not all have been pulled but a majority have. Especially check out anything Navy Seals, but the majority seems to be under Marines

Good job Tom - now that you have posted possession of such a ring on a public message board you can be assured that you will now be placed on a national watch list. Keep an eye out for dark sedans with two occupants, you may now consider yourself to be under constant surveilance.

Me too! I called Ashcroft goofy

To hell with him, bring on the goons in dark sedans

http://www.swineopia.com/rep_leaders_meet.htm

This stuff makes him goofy in my eyes

Ashcroft defended his controversial practice of pouring Crisco oil on the heads of terrorism suspects to determine their guilt. The Attorney General pointed out that he had done the same thing to himself when he entered the US Senate. "Anointing is an old biblical tradition," Ashcroft said to reporters after his speech. "And I want you press folks to stop calling it Crisco. It's not Crisco once I bless it.

Maybe the 4 or 5 of us here who are like-minded fellows should form a suspecious group..."The Fellowship of the Ring?"
