A new worm is out. Hit late Monday & is raising Hexx with Windows, specially XP. I was lucky that my Norton updated early this AM. My friend wasn't so lucky, had to take her tower into Gateway Country Store. Couldn't keep it running long enough to get it fixed. Norton couldn't even put it in quarantine. Hers got hit yesterday afternoon.

The worm, also known as MSBlaster or LoveSan, surfaced on Monday in the U.S. and quickly spread around the world, taking advantage of a security hole discovered last month in Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows NT, and Windows Server 2003 operating systems.
Symantec said Windows 2000 and XP computers in North America are getting scanned or infected after being connected to the Internet for an average of 25 minutes.
I guess the older windows OS's are okay.

Pclady: If you can keep your 'puter up long enough, maybe you can get into Norton. I couldn't do it. I was lucky, I had just gone into MS & updated my Windowas 2000 on Saturday, so I had the patch & was saved.

I understand you can get this worm by using the windows updates that is sent to you. They recommend you do no updating of your windows.

Yes, I heard about it today! I guess it is nasty. I updated my virus scan software immediately & updated Windows. Everyone reading this should update ASAP. Here is more info from Symantec:

Thanks for that link, local.
I have the patch. Now, do I need a firewall?

I think you just need to do a windows update. Microsoft has a patch to download. I use a firewall & have a router. A router is supposed to be like a firewall & supposedly you don't need both, but I have both. If you have high speed internet, you should have a firewall or a router.
However, viruses can still be attached to emails.

Libra, I don't think that is true. I just did an update & also I have Norton with auto update & Norton Security. Not worrying about it.

I downloaded a firewall and now all ports, including 135 are "stealthed". (Apparently thats the worms entry way.)
You may check the vulnerability of ports here...

To comment further on your Mac users remark: There will come a day when the Mac is just as vulnerable. It's only a matter of time. Don't feel so smug and safe. Internet criminals are getting better and better at what they do. And NO system is fail safe.

How can someone find out if there's a worm or trojan on their puter?

mezuzas: If you have MSBlaster in you "puter, it will continually shut you down & restart. If you don't have an antivirusin stalled you could be at great risk. If you are on broadband (DSL) you should also have a firewall to prevent hackers from getting into your files.
