First, I like to say that I hope everyone who is being affected by this disaster safely survives with little or no harm. Unbelievable. I especially feel for the New Yorkers.
That being said, I started to wonder how much of an impact this will have on Ebay sales tonight and tomorrow. I always have quite a few buyers from the New York area.
With sales on the slow side already, Ebay may have a very sorry night. What do you think?

obviously will have a major impact tonight, I've already noticed a difference with half.com sales, they are very slow today. Depends on how fast they get the power up, since it seems non terror related, I imagine it will be up and running soon and by tomorrow, hopefully all will be back to normal

Unfortunately N.Y. is just a part of the problem. It gets most of the media attention but large parts of Mich , Ohio, N.J. and Conn. not to mention parts of S.E. Canada also were affected. Should take a toll on bidding.

Well, I just figured my stats from all my auctions that end every Thursday night and they are staple items in my inventory that aren't antiques and it certainly made an impact, they all are buy it now and not bids so it is pretty accurate and each Thursday is about the same as the last. I lost about 19%.
Gosh, I feel so sorry for all those impacted... I just keep picturing being stuck in the subway and having to walk...yuck!

While millions of people suffer without power. While major U.S. cities are shut down our President is spending billions of our dollars overseas. Iraq will wind up with a new power grid while U.S. men, woman and children plus U.S. business will suffer because our power grid is outdated. I wonder how much business I will lose because of this mess. Pres. Bush I voted for ya last time but never again because you just don't get it, "its the ECOMONY STUPID" you need to take of your home boys first.

Cleveland, here! We finally have our power restored. They said at first it's because everyone came home from work and turned their air on. Ya, right. First of all, it happened here at 4:22 p.m. and second of all, it wasn't that hot out. Anyway, glad it's back on and yes, I think it will effect sales.

I like to wish everyone who is being affected by this disaster a safely recovery from this disaster without any loss of life and that there is no shortage of food or drinking water in the areas affected.

There were about 50 Million people without Power at the high of the blackout that is about 1/6 of the US population. http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2003/8/15/latest/13541Largestpo&sec=latest

There were Nine Nuclear Plants shut down, it usually takes 3 days to bring it back to normal production, Coal and Gas electric plants at least 24 to 48 hours to bring them back to full poduction. According to an economist that specializes on Electric Power.

Potable water is treated and pumped with electricity also. So there is the possibility of Water Shortages. The amount of food spoiled will be unbelievable, after 24 hours without Power all the food in storage at home and at busineses without auxiliary Power will be spoiled.

To me that means that the number of users at ebay may drop for at least 1/6, so sales would be down for the next three days. Things should be back to normal for Monday. No sense to start listing until Monday, again. Listings should drop below 9 Million from the present 9.6 Million. eBay may offer some type of promotion to change the trend.http://www.medved.net/cgi-bin/cal.exe?EIND

There are 2 million new auctions every day on ebay. I bet the chart does not dip noticeably at all and without any freebie promotions. Money makes the world go round and life at ebay will tolerate a lot of bumps and bruises.

Our bank is off line in South Carolina...The teller that hand wrote my deposit today said it was the Power Outage...so it affecting more than just them.We can't use our debit card anywhere. My husband tried to get gas this morning and the debit card was declined ...he had to use the paypal card lol...whew glad I got some money in that account.I would say it's going to be a large impact on e-bay sales this weekend. The teller said they had already been told it wasn't going to be back on line today either.
