Last night I was shopping in a couple of categories I haven't visited in a while. I liked many items that had BIN's about $5 over the starting price. I didn't want to pay the BIN price but I would have bid at the starting price. I didn't bid because I didn't want to "mess up" the auction by removing the BIN. I doubt that I will revisit the auctions.

I wonder how many buyers feel the same way ? Sellers who put "pie-in-the-sky" BINs on their items may just be burning listing fees! Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I always thought that was the beauty of the BIN. Either you get it or you dont. As a buyer, why would you worry to 'mess up' the auction??

To me a BIN is like saying I'd like to sell it for this amount, But I'll take less. I have no quams or feeling of guilt that the seller's children will starve if I bid and they have to sell the widget at less than the BIN.

I use to see BINs on auctions that had super low start prices. What were those sellers thinking? It's like throwing that nickle away. I doubt that very many buyers care about the seller losing his BIN option by bidding. I wish ebay would leave the darn BIN on even if a bid has been placed. Ebay could email the high bidder and tell them the item they were high bidder on has sold instead of the standard outbid email.

One thing about the new page layout that I've noticed is the auctions that had BIN prices but have received bids now have a notation that says But It Now - No longer available because a bid has been placed. whereas before any mention of the BIN was erased completely.

I wouldn't exactly say $5.00 over the starting bid is "pie in the sky". That seems reasonable to me. What about the people who start it at $.01 with a BIN of $250.00 or so?

If the BIN is within 20% of the start bid it has a chance to get a buyer but I see a lot of auctions with a $5 start bid and a $39.99 BIN price that oftentimes these auctions never even get the $5 bid yet alone a shot at the $40 BIN.

Yeah, Ace. Its almost like the seller is telling the buyer, they expect to get at least that much for it and maybe your in for a bidding war if you have the slightest of interest.

I am not a bidding war type. I just want what I want, and be done with it. So the bin often times works good for me. Although I have taken my chances and entered my 1 bid hoping it would ride out at that.

I saw an auction a couple of days ago, started at 9.99, BIN $10, what is the point? Much better to do a fixed auction if you are going to do that. As a seller, I use BIN less than I used to. I used it a lot when I re-listed, but I have been finding that sometimes the auction is going for a lot more than I had as the starting price on the original listing. I guess it just depends on who is looking, when.

I put a BIN on last night started at $9.99 with a BIN of $25.00. One hour later someone did the BIN. Now, was it worth more than $25.00? I will never know.

The only time I will use a BIN is when I know the past price range of a common auction item.
