tomwiii says "The fact remains that nobody buys them...!" I know I have used a Mac for almost 20 years and will continue to do so until they pry the mouse from my cold dead hand. Just wonder how many more "nobodies" are out there on The eBay Outlook.

So... Mac Users Sign In!

No need to bash the "other platform" or point out the obvious superiorities of "our" computer. Just say "I do."

By the way everyone I know, and I know a LOT of Mac users, call the company Apple but the computer Macintosh.

I'm an off and on Mac user.

I'm not a total convert to the cult of Apple, but I'll admit that there is less fiddling to get things to work on the Apple.

I got my iBook set up to access my wireless network in 5 minutes. I recently spent 4 hours trying to find the right drivers to get my Dell wireless card working right, and finally re-installed Windows XP to clear out the damage I'd done.

And I'm A+ certified...

Well, we still NOT addressing my point which is: "Why don't viruses & worms & trojans attacks Apples?"

Ye can spew all day long as to how wonderful MACs are, still doesn't address the issue.

Use both platforms, Mac at school (in the labs), PC at home. No strong preference one way or the other but PC gives more bang for the buck.

"Why don't viruses & worms & trojans attacks Apples?"

Several reasons:

A) Modern macs use OS X, which is essentially UNIX. Security is much more "built in" with a Unix system. Microsoft has always been weak with security. Even if you do manage to get one of the few Unix viruses out there, it can only destroy files under one user account.

B) There are more Windows computers than Mac systems, so if you are writing a virus and want to see it spread widely, which platform do you create it for?

C) Microsoft Outlook, with its ability to automatically run scripts embedded in an email is the most hideous program ever created for security failures. The Mac version of outlook does not have this questionable "feature. Microsoft recently released a press statement stating they have ceased development on Outlook Express."

If only 7% of the computer users run an apple why would a hacker even waste their time creating hacks for it? A pie with 93% of the slices left in it is good enough for most hackers.

Tom - why the gloat? Was there a contest we were unaware of? The fact that the majority of users operate from a windows flatform does not make it suddenly more stable, less buggy, less prone to viruses or security breaches.

All it means is that people are willing to sacrifice for a cheaper price tag.

Mac=Love!

Reason they go after the Billster? He's putting product on the market that is not ripe for pickin'. Tis common knowledge on the MS Campus.

And....

Even my dog knows that a Mac has a longer shelf life.....

I've used a Mac laptop Nice.. Have a big blue box, but think I might go Mac next time, like the neat compact design and near trouble free software. Hate having cords dangling every where to run one desktop.

Hey you guys! Back off the attack on poor Tom and Ralphie!! I think his point with the "nobody" was that the hackers aren't going to bother messing with the 7% MAC population when they can have so much fun with the huge pc-windows user population. I think everyone can agree with that.

I spent $4,000 on my first computer system in 1994...it was obsolete within 2 years with the advent of CD drives and the Al Gore (lol) invented internet..I held on until 1998 when I purchased a $1500 IBM system...added more RAM to that and held on as it became more and more obsolete until 2002 when I purchased 2 emachines for $500 each..I am pleased as punch! They work swell for my needs (mostly eBay, word processing, image storage and accounting <--- oops forgot to add bridge playing on MSN zone). So i vote for the cheaper price tag and I don't feel like I am sacrificing a thing!

FE - your needs may be different and so your choices are different. I obviously don't have to find the square root of "pi" and am not in a position to judge quality ...the price tag will always be the deciding factor for me!

The emachine was an iMac rip off....and they are just about good for some bare bones stuff these days.
I have a robust system that can edit video, photos, and do all the mundane work that an emachine can just about still do.
Bill "borrowed" the Apple platform, and still can't get it right.

If you already have your monitor and acessories like a keyboard, mouse and speakers you can buy a near state of the art IBM clone computer for $300 - $400. How much is a Mac? Heck, you can give the thing away after a couple years and it cost you only a few dollars per month. No special little section of the store ( if they even have one ) where all the Mac componnets are double or triple priced above the mainstream IBM stuff.

One other benefit of Apple is the resale value- just like a Mercedes.

I bought my iBook two years ago for $1300 at CompUSA and sold it a couple months ago for over $1000 on eBay. That's only a $300 cost for using it for nearly two years. Maybe I just got lucky, but it's a true story.

Can anyone say THAT about a PC laptop?

Auction - I recently added a new hard drive to my Mac. (180 gig - $135 shipped ) I think it took a total of 15 minutes from opening the box to transfering files to it. Try doing that with a PC.

No dirver conflicts, no compatibility conflicts etc. Like I said it's a matter of quality vs budget. I'll pay extra for a Mac product if it means I don't spend 3 hours trying to get the thing to work or work in conjunction with my other items.

The IBM has no resale value when compared to a Mac because you can buy a new IBM for $300-$400 for the main unit. No laying out $1,300 to $4,000 for a computer that will out of date in a few years anyway.
