I sold a US Robotics 56K external modem on ebay. Guy gets it, said its useless to him, as its for a MACINTOSH.
I've been to the auctions for these, and still cannot figure it out.
For one, I didn't think that you needed the drivers for these, as they are 'plug and play' that win 95 and higher it will work. Say you STILL have Win 3.1 then you would need drivers?
(the reason the guy said it was for a MAC is that he needed Drivers for it... )
Went to the US Robotics site, and that was no help.
There are some on auction, that look identical, and they are saying that they are for PC or Mac??????
The model # is 0701
its a Sportster 005689-03
I sold it, ONLY with power supply and not cable connections.
IF it is for MAC only, then they look to go higher than for a PC
Anyone know if this is a for a Mac only???
Do I know if its the same one I sent him? No. These all look alike, and no I didn't check the model #'s
Thanks!!!!!

Near - most modems are cross platform. You are not responsible for user ignorance.

By cross platform, you do mean, compatible with both PC and Mac?
So ok dumb question #1001 if I relist it, I'm not sure if I should put that in there, but put the model and serial # in
The catagories for external modems, do not have sub cats. of PC or MAC, just one cat. of external modems.. Thats another thing that got me.
All I've read about this modem, is its a 'plug and play' and should not need drivers, as this buyer said he needed, UNLESS he was still using Win 3, which is highly unlikely, but not impossible I guess!

I know nothing about Mac's.
But if you go to google search for drivers, you may find what your looking for.
You could copy to disc and send it to him.
Or refund get it back, then sell it again with the drivers.
MAC or PC you need the drivers!

I wonder if that's not really a USR Sportster 005686-03, a very nice modem.
That's one of the modems I use here. I have it on a PC running Win98 right
now.
A external serial modem usually doesn't need any special drivers though
there is a Control Program available for this one to Flash upgrade it to V92
mode and the Control Program also has some utilities to ease setup and
testing.
Are you going to relist it anytime soon? I'd like to bid on it.

The techie just got home. I have seen this problem before. Give me a minute to check out that model. I will check on the model # you listed. In the mean time, Let's just say that there a a few occurances but not many when an external modem is for a MAC only. It isnt the modem itself that is not compatible, it's the cables that come with the modem. I have used a "MAC" US Robotics modem on a PC before. Let me see if I can find the drivers for it. Be back in a sec
There should be an FCC number on the modem. Can you please list that here. It would make this alot easier. If there is a way to tweak it to work with windows, I'll find out. On first look, it seems this model was designed to work with a MAC only.
I think I found a site that has drivers. PLEASE looks for the FCC number. Should be on the back of the modem. That is the best way for me to look for the drivers for you. Please let me know if you need it for win 95 98 or what

jnash, that is what I always thought, and was told... that the external ones didn't need the drivers, they are NOT like the 'winmodems'.

The numbers you gave me help but if I had the FCC number, it would make it alot easier. the FCC number is a long string of numbers preceeded by FCC:

NO! It is not only for a Mac and is a nice external modem... sold 5 of them last year for a nice bit of profit

you are correct. It's the FCC reg number. Equipment displaying this label would only be in this database if it also has an FCC ID: label. (e.g older modems) That's what I would need. Here is the link I was using. I sure hope this helps.

I've had several external modems in the past including USR, and never had to use drivers with them. Everything is built into the firmware in the modem. The only software I've ever seen packaged with a new modem is a disk containing an optional fax and/or communications program. They are o/s independent. Your serial cables determine what type of machine it will mate to.
