I was just browsing some listings as I'm in between "real" jobs and actually have time to spare. I've noticed this before and now I'm gonna ask....why do some sellers charge more for USPS Priority Mail shipping to Hawaii and Alaska? I ship via Priority to AL and HI frequently enough to know it doesn't cost any more than to ship to the lower 48. Am I'm missing something here? Or is this just another way for sellers to gouge buyers with shipping?

Are you sure it was USPS?
UPS charges more!

I live in Atlanta, Ga and I have noticed I get charged more than when I send to the East coast. That is from the USPS

Definitely USPS. That's why it caught my eye. A Priority Mail package, weighing less than 1 pound, costs the same to FL or MI or HI when I ship it. This seller was charging $5.00 for the Lower 48 and $6.00 for AL or HI.
Of course, if it weighs more than 1 pound, the rate varies as it goes by ZIP code.

This seller is just taking advantage of opportunity!

Must use more free tape to send to those states!

These sellers aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.
They must be erroneously assuming that there is an extra USPS charge similar to UPS, FedEx for shipping to the two non-mainland states.

WRONG.

USPS Does charge way more if the package weighs more than a pound. It is only the same if it is under a pound. You are obviously only shipping items under a pound at $3.85. Once a package is over a pound, then the zone rates take over. And since Hawaii, Alaska, Guam and Puerto Rico you must ship over an ocean, it will cost much more. On the other hand, it is usually cheaper to ship USPS Priority to those locations than using UPS, Fedex or any other company like that. But those bidders already know that it simply will cost them more to get items delivered to them.

Just an unrelated factoid:UPS offers ground service FROM Hawaii even though it's over an ocean.

Some use shipping to scalp their customers.

Alaska to the lower 48 under 2lb over 1lb costs $5.75, under 1lb. $3.85. Almost everyplace from here is zone 8. Makes my shipping charges easy...same price for everybody!

I personally don't buy from seller's who gouge for USPS Alaska shipping. It wouldn't be anymore than say shipping from New York to L.A.

By the way the abbreviation for Alaska is AK. AL is Alabama.

I of course avoid any items that are stricly UPS shipping as UPS air is very costly to AK.

If a seller in California adds an extra buck to the first 399 shipments to Hawaii, he can buy a round trip plane ticket and hand deliver the 400th package free. Sort of like a sweepstakes, buyer # 400 gets free shipping and seller gets a trip to Hawaii. Sounds good to me

Hi Jack (oops, better not say that at an airport) I actually learned to swim in Alaska. It was during the summer and we were in Ketchikan when I was a kid. The Ruskies are still steaming at getting the short end of the deal on "Sewards Folly". If Seward had been an Ebay seller, Square Trade would have gone up in flames over that deal. I also prefer the bikinis and mai tais over the creeping king crabs that weigh half as much as I do. Still, I gotta say, some of the most beautiful scenery in America is in Alaska. And on the rare occasions I ship to an APO or FPO in either state, the customer only gets charged postage to Seattle or final destination, whichever is less.

I have a 15 pound package going to:
Kapaa, Kaua'i, Hawaii 96746 by priority mail. The cost is $27.80.

I also ship by UPS and the same package would cost $52.85 by 2nd day air. That's the only way UPS will ship it.

I checked the other options in UPS Worldship and that is the only one that applies.

Just a minor point but there is a difference between shipping and handling (S/H) and post office fees.

I choose to list flat shipping and handling fee, one for USA, One for Canada (often the same as USA) and one for rest of world.

From my side of the screen it works well as buyer knows where they stand before they bid (or not). I loose a dollar here, gain a dollar there but is much simpler.
Most of my lots weigh less than 1 lb but occasionally to 15 pounds.

Again Shipping and handling is NOT the same as post office fees. Why either would vary to Alaska or Hawaii I have not a clue.

Who ever the SOB is that is charging more to ship to HI or AK from the contioues states is a rip off artist. There is no difference in charges within the USA. It is all on wgt. & Zip Code. Whether you ship from Maine to CA or to AK, it is the wgt & Zip Code that determines the cost.

I am in the pacific NW, it is actually cheaper for me to ship to Alaska than New York. Hawaii is zone 8 from everywhere (except Hawaii)
