I have spys all over my computer. I downloaded a free shareware called spybot - it removed a bunch of spy files but I keep getting more - a search engine called "coolweb" pops up a window everytime I do a search in my address bar. I am worried about password thefts etc. Any advice on a really good program that gets rid of these guys? I prefer free but will pay if I have to.
THanks!

I use Ad-Aware. I think it's a similar thing. I run it every now and again and it removes a bunch of those ad files and spying things.

Auction - now that you have sent the already mellowdramatic Orleans into a tizzy of fear over this supposed Trojan Horse virus, I'm curious as to what it was about her post asking for reccomendation for software to help ease her parnoid fears made it sound as though her computer may have a Torjan virus?
My god man, do you not read the posts in RT? You coud send her right over the edge. Next thing you know they'll be news stories about some crazy woman attacking aligators with hefty bags full of designer clothes demanding that they return her passwords.
What are we going to do with you?
Orleans honey - turn your cookie preference to Must Approve status. you can accept and deny as you wishand you get to find out all the crap that ebay tries to attach to you.

I use pestpatrol.
It's detected and killed a lot of nasty things. I hate to think what was lurking on my computer before I got it.
The software isn't free, but I see they now have a free online spyware scanner.
I originally got it because it was only $10 with the purchase of zonealarm.
I think it's a great product and will be renewing my subscription at regular price (unless I can get another deal when I renew zonealarm) when it comes due next month.
From their website:
"PestPatrol...detects and eliminates destructive pests like trojans, spyware, adware and hacker tools."

I just installed Spybot - Search and Destroy. It's freeware and works quite well. I was surprised at the stuff it found on my computer. I downloaded it from AOL, but I suspect you can probably find it on downloads.com.

well....while you're over there at spybot you should download JAVACOOLS which then is integregated into spybot and blocks all those nasty cookies.
although if you seriously have a question about *what* is lurking on your computer still after spybot..go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/index2.php and take a look around there. If you STILL can't find the answer to what you're looking for, go to their forum, they answer almost as fast as they do over here. They are super helpful and nice folks to boot.
