Is he paying the extra? Thats his problewm. If the article is lost or damaged, FedEx will demand proof of value & will only pay that amount. Keep all correspondence so that you are in the clear. He may be trying to run a scam. He may have a like article that is damamged & he has receipts showing it was valued at $500.00.

i am using his fed exp account, but darn it,i forgot to take out extra insurance.
so he is now underinsured.
(i dont think it is a good idea for seller to collaborate on scamming the carrier!)
if the buyer uses his own fed exp account and call fed exp the item is broken and insurance is 500,does the 500 go to him since it is his fed exp account which is paying for the shipping??
i know it usually goes to the seller who is the shipper, but we are using his fed exp account??

stopwhining, if you don't normally ship Fed Ex you are letting this guy run your auction. You might get caught up in his fraud.

true,i ship usps ,so this is an exception.
the driver just picked up the item and since i forget to take out extra insurance,it is now covered for 100 only.
i dont think this is going to hurt me as paypal does not care if the item is broken as long as i can prove it has been shipped .
as far as fed exp goes,he is both the shipper and the receiver.
if the item is broken,i have another one i can replace.
but just wonder why anyone wants to insure for 500 when an item is 160.
unless like the prior poster said,he has a broken item at home with an invoice of 500.
we shall see.

One thing you should do if using a Fedex number to ship is call Fedex and verify that the account belongs to them.
They probably wanted it insured for $500 since that is the next step after $100 for Fedex air.
You probably don't need to worry, there isn't much chance it will be damaged or broken with overnight shipping.

Maybe you sold it too cheap? If it's worth $500.00, send him an email and tell him to send you another $340.00 so you can sleep better at night.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

in the computer industry it is not unusual to insure for the replacement value of an item when it is shipping. That way should it be lost or damaged, you can use the insurance to replace what you owned. Think of it this way. If you buy a raffle ticket for $5 and win a 2004 Corvette, do you insure the Corvette for the $5 you have into the deal? On the other hand (literally), when you buy your wife's wedding ring for $5K and the insurance appraisal comes in at $12.5K we all know that the appraisal is so high so the premiums are more and that the insurance company will only reimburse a maximum of the $5K. So it's all based upon industry practices...Maybe I'm unusual in thinking the person had a legitimate reason to insure for $500. It's not like he asked you to pack it lousy or anything....

thanks for all the advice,if the next level of insurance coverage after 100 is 500 for fed exp air, that should explain it.

Over insuring, at least with UPS, isn't a way to "scam" UPS - I often insure a delicate item for $1,000, as at that level, the item is HANDLED (physically speaking) totally different than below $1,000. We have almost never had breakage/loss, etc., with items insured for $1,000, and it doesn't cost that much more.

We use our computer based program to do our UPS, and have a daily pick up, I am not sure such is feasible if you go to the counter.
