Hi all,

I listed this old oil/kerosene finger lamp this evening. Researched the heck out of it on eBay and Googled it every way I know. Couldn't come up with a name for the pattern other than maybe it's Eyebrow? Or Peanut??

My knowledge of EAPG, which is what I think it is, is abysmal.

Anyone recognize it? Any age clues?

It's a nice old lamp - I wish I knew more about it.

Thanks a bunch,

Thanks... It is pretty. The glass has that good old clear color. Not like new...

Lucy...I'll be the first to admit that what I know about kerosene lamps will fit on the head of a pin. There is a dealer here in town who likes to get his hands on good ones and our paths cross every so often at estate sales.I once eavsdropped on a conversation he was having with a lady and he was telling her that the key to the age of these things lies in the knob/wheel that is used to elevate the wick. That is the very first thing he examines. What he looks for, I don't know, but it seems to be a very important part of the lamp for him.

Wow Toasted! Thanks!

That'll teach me to search "kerosene lamp" won't it? I didn't even see it. Sure wish they knew the name of the pattern.

It is the same as mine. Too bad the burner is gone. I'll be interested to see how the bidding goes. 'Specially since I started mine at $18.99.

Hmmm....

Hi all,
This is an old pattern (from the 1800's) and was called Eyewinker. However it was reissued within the last 40 years or so and during Jimmie Carter's time it came to be known as the peanut pattern. I don't have the right books here to give the exact dated and what was reissued but will try to remember and look it up when I get to the shop. I have had a few pieces of old in green with the 'eyebrows' in gold that were beautiful.

Hi all,

Thanks so much for pointing me in the Eyewinker direction. I checked eBay and Google and in the process came across this very informative site.

http://www.trevinocircle.com/findlay/index.html

Not sure about my lamp being Eyewinker, though. It doesn't have swirls between the eyes. Different base, too. Not as ornate as what I saw on eBay.

Anyway, thanks again! I appreciate the help.

Lucy

Hello antique dealers have called it a peanut pattern for years, most likely made around Pittsburgh Pa. Nice little lamp. I have had a couple of this pattern in a table lamp in the past year. I did better price wise 30 years ago then today. Good Luck.

Hi all,

Well, after I decided it wasn't Eyewinker, I did some research on Peanut.

It's Peanut, all right. There are a few on eBay but none with the handle. Strange name for a pattern...

Unfortunately, since there are bids on mine, I can't change the title. For the sake of accuracy, I guess I should cancel the bids and end the listing.

Thanks everyone for your help. As usual, this board is the very best place to come when stumped...

Too bad I didn't start here but oftentimes there is so much ridicule and disparaging comments I kinda try to do it on my own.

I hear that. I'm amazaed that when people post truly beautiful photos that there are several posters that tell them they need better photos. All that, while the average ebay auction photo is either an amorphous fuzzy blob or a ultra dark photo that is worthless.

Your lamp should do well. The uniqueness of having a handle should be a big plus. Relisting is only 30 cents.

Hi Ace,

I agree completely. It is just SO RUDE to criticize a person's pictures, especially when they're just fine. Maybe that's all some people know to do - disparage and put people down. Perhaps it makes them feel superior.

Thanks for the pat on the back on relisting the lamp. I really don't like to do that, cancel bids, I mean. Those bidders will probably be disappointed. OTOH, the bidders who didn't find the lamp because I mis-described would also be.

Lucy

P.S. Keep up the good work!
