Does anyone use Airborne Express for shipping? My brother-in-law told me about them. They are almost always cheaper than UPS and FedEx. They come to your house and pick up for free, and bill everything to your credit card on file.
He uses them for his ebay auctions and is very satisfied. I think I may give them a try. USPS is still cheaper on the letter sized and light items but looking at the price quotes they could have saved me almost $20 last week.
rate calc is here: http://sbw.airborne.com/CompareRate/CompareRateInfo.asp
EDIT: I just checked and you have to have 5 packages or more for them to pickup for free.

You couldn't pay me enough to use them. I used to have to use them with the company I worked for. After frequent phone calls saying that our address didn't exist (really, where was I then??), lost packages, late deliveries, mis-deliveries and generally poor customer service, we finally switched back to FedEx.

I think I may give them a try. They just merged with DHL, perhaps that may improve some things. Maybe not.
I have had problems with every shipper I have used. I have just come to accept it as part of shipping. USPS is known to destroy my packages and lose them, sending back an address label in a plastic bag with a too bad so sad note. UPS has taken packages to ship, taken my money, then before I get out the door claimed they could not ship the item and refused to give the money back. FedEX is known to leave a pickup notice on your door, then deliver the package to your door the next day while your at the pickup center looking for it. If anyone finds a perfect shipper let me know.

DHL isn't much better, especially here in the states. Overseas, DHL used to be very good. Haven't used them recently. Just remember one thing...mergers don't usually make things better as quick as they make them worse.

I use Airborne, but not for anything I care about.
Misdelivered packages, addresses "corrected" that didn't need correcting, hidden fees that you only find out about when you get the invoice...you name it, Airborne does it.
You don't need to have a credit card on file. They'll open an account for you. They'll welcome you with open arms, believe me.

I just had a customer pay me via Bidpay who unfortunately uses Airborne for overnight delivery. Payment should have arrived last Tuesday, it took until Friday for Bidpay to finally get back to me with a tracking number on it (wrong tracking number BTW). Once I got on the phone with Airborne and got the right tracking number they told me that the driver could not find the address. OK, I'll accept that I guess, this is a wierd location... I give them the address of the business across the street that accepts packages for me and am told they will deliver on Monday....nope...Payment actually arrives on Wednesday.
Airborn would not be my first choice.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Oh My God. Whatever you do don't use Airborne. Delivered overnight plane tickets--they left them at someone elses address and I never received them. I called to complain and they told me they had been delivered but they weren't sure where and that I should go door to door and look for them myself and that the lady they gave them to said that she would give them to me. I kid you not. Needless to say I never got the tickets. I had to call the ticket agent to reissue tickets. They were of absolutely no help and their attitude was that it was my fault. You will be sorry.

I bought a computer and Airborne was supposed to be the shipper for 2 day delivery for 5 boxes containing the system. After 6 business days the first box came in then one a day after that. Every employee of Airdead wanted to know why this was a problem "You did get it didn't you" was the stock answer. At least the computer company refunded the shipping.

I haven't had a problem with Airborne so far. I'm actually quite surprised by everyones statements.
I used to use UPS (by far the most expensive shipping company), but they damaged a box box with an acoustic guitar and half the packing peanuts came out. When it arrived at the customers door, they left it outside in below 20 degree weather. Hello??? An acoustic guitar outside for 6 hours in 20 degrees. Needless to say that the guitar arrived with a crack in the bridge. UPS denied my claim, stating that the guitar wasn't properly packaged within two boxes. It was in a hardshell case, with at least 4 inches of packing around it within a double walled box. Go figure. I appealed their decision, and they declined it again. I requested an outside mediator get involved, and I ended up winning. I had to fight for their obvious neglect.
Fed Ex is too inconvenient for me and they charge a fee for pickups at your store (they all charge a fee). I can drop my package for Airborne down the street on my way to or from work. They also won't cover glass or fragile items over $100.
Until they prove themselves unworthy, I will continue using them. If you have any other suggestions beyond Fed Ex and UPS, I'm all eyes...
