I have an older computer that has some of my Ebay templates on it. The CD writer and the A drive died on the old one.

I think I remember hearing somewhere I can somehow hook my two computers up and assign the old one a new hard drive number and access it through my new computer as just an additional hard drive.

For you computer guru's out there, is this possible? Is it complicated?

You can take the hard drive out of the old one and if room in your new one, install it as a secondary slave to the new hard drive, that should allow you access it as the the computer will boot from your new hard drive and see the other as just another disk....

Or if you have a network set up, you can "share" the C drive on the old one so that the new one can access it....

Thanks.

Guess I will give the Computer Dr. (a mobile computer repair guy here) a call and see if I can get the old hard drive installed in the new one. I'm not too brave when it comes to messing around with the computers because we also have our home business info on the new one.

Or, I might look into networking since I have the new notebook also. I had considered setting up a network when I bought that one so I guess it may be time to give it a try.

If the only problems with the old one are a floppy drive and the cd burner, you can replace them, using a cd read only drive for under $25.00. This will give you a computer for dedicated use such as a graphics workstation for your images and a backup system in case your new one gets the hickups some day.As suggested, you can temporarily install the c drive from the old computer as a slave d drive in the new one and copy all the files you need to the new computer. Then reinstall it as a c drive back in the old one. A simpler way is to install a file transfer program on both computers and transfer files in either direction via the serial ports and a null modem. I use an older Dos based program called Xport on my computers and it works great.

Sparkz will that work with win2k or winxp?

They don't like dos based programs....

I have PC Anywhere. It come with the cable to hook two computers together. I used Explorer to move things from one to the other.

The simplest way to go if your old PC can still get on the internet... Just ZIP up the files and email them to yourself.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am looking into the PC anywhere program, but for now followed Replays advice and just emailed the templates to myself.

I do have a couple of actual programs I would like to save that I ordered online and would have to upgrade them to download them again. I will look for PC Anywhere to solve that one.

Twelvepole...I'm not really sure about XP, I've never tried that system. It should work on just about any computer you can get a Dos command line prompt on. There are probably several Windows based programs available that would work in a similar way. I use this one because I still use Windows 98.

Ahhh Win98 still had a dos shell, where starting with win2k it was pseudo-dos...

Sounds like an interesting program will have to check it out....
Thanks

I have XP and have to say I like 98 better. I'd love to clean off my drive and start over however, with XP you have to go through the pain of calling MicroSoft to get the code so you can use the program. I'm dreading when the day comes I have to reload XP!

Microsoft did that to deter piracy of their software... it is a pain... but there are ways around it...

Well, Lindajean, if you lived near me, I could replace both for you! Too bad you are so far away. You can replace both the floppy and the Cd writer driver very easily.
