SMC is still trying to figure out why I can't upload picture to VD but they had me tweaking my computer today. And they were right, there's a difference with this. When these computers were built they weren't built for cable modem...so you have to manually tweak your speed (MTU etc. I used the numbers next to the bottome of the list). It sure a made a difference on my computer as far as pages loading quicker....but my pictures still won't upload. Back to the phone...

I just helped a friend install a new computer. She was using an old one with Win 95 on cable with no problems. I couldn't get the new one up on cable. Had to call foe help., trouble was in the settings. It was set for dial up. Changed the settings & Voila, we had cable. I had never had anything to do with cable hookup before. This gal is so absolutely computer ignorant. The only thing she does is buy & sell on ebay & email. I told her husband to send her to the Community College & get some good training.

Maybe you have to have a router set up too for it to slow it as much as mine was. I've tried tweaking my computer before and I've never noticed a difference, but this time, it was like WOW. It just made sense to me as old as my computer is, that there was no cable modem at that time.

Just thought I'd pass it along if you weren't afraid to change the registry. I wasn't, but then I back it up before I changed it.

Do you have a firewall (either a program or a router)? Are the images bigger than the size that VD accepts?

I've been running a cable modem on an emachine that runs Win98, never had a problem. Never had to touch any settings other than telling the computer to go from dial up to always on line.

Have you gone to the Windows site and done any updates for Win98?

I used a 1998 IBM with WIndows 98 for 4 years with cable modem and no problems ( I did add some RAM ).

Maybe you have a bad router or even cables..I got some good advice here when I set up my wireless network and ended up taking back the router http://www.vendio.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=520859

ok all ya'll just laugh. That darned desktop was running like it was a 486 since I added the wireless router until I tweaked it. Now it loads pages just like the new laptop does. Everything except upload pics to VD that is.....

I'd just read over here so many times how so many were complaining about how slooooow Ebay pages load. I thought I'd pass along what actually made a BIG difference on my computer. I don't pass anything along unless I have used it myself and know that it is significant. Like Spybot and JavaCools, and the Google toolbar.
