This morning one of my personal end of auction notice's bounced back."Reason: not our customer" So I do some checking, signed up 10/19/03 yup, Sunday. This person has already "won" about $600.00 woth of product due to various sellers including myself. I pull their contact info: name: it is their ebay user ID which is 4 letters that do not equal a real name, last name none, address ** USA, phone number, an 800# I called it and it is a credit card company # for reporting lost or stolen cc.
I thought that when you reg. with ebay they "verified" the email addy before you could proceed on a shopping frenzie. Guess not and in this case it is not one of the popular "free" email addy. File and move on, just hope that the other sellers do the same and they are off ebay sooner than later. But with ebay's time lapse on things they can have alot more "fun" before ebay catches up with them.

I think I'd be even more worried if they DO pay. Looks pretty fishy to me..hope you reported the invalid contact info.

I wonder if it's possibly an ebay competitor looking to hassle another ebay competitor. The contact info has to be half way legit and the email addresses HAS to be completely valid. ( not a full mailbox or unknow user )
If a free email address is used a valid credit card must be used to registered. A while ago ebay made an exception to that rule. Fratnernal organizations and similar are exempt from the credit card verification even though they are free email accounts. There are several fraternal and church organizations that offer free email accounts to non-members so that is a slight loophole.

"If a free email address is used a valid credit card must be used to registered."
This is incorrect information, AuctionAce.
I very recently got a secondary eBay
User ID for bidding purposes only
through myway.com, a free email
account service.
I signed up on myway.com first
and then proceeded to register
a brand new User ID using this
free email account on eBay.
Ebay did NOT require me to give them
my credit card information when I registered the free email account with
them. All eBay did was verifiy that my
new email address worked. They sent me a short email with instructions on
how to complete the registration process.
Nothing else was required and my
new User ID works fine. My credit
card was never submitted to them
with this new FREE account.
(www.myway.com is not a fraternal
or church organization)

Okay, there are some instances where out of the thousands of free email providers a very rare one passes by the ebay database, especially if they are brand new.
I just set up a free email account at myway.com and when I tried to register at ebay it just gave up this message
Registration is free. However, you'll need to place a credit or debit card on file for identification.
So apparently myway email accounts are no longer accepted without a credit card.

Then try:
www.angryforlife.com
www.egypt2000.com
These are also free email accounts
where I registered with eBay late this summer without placing a credit card
on file. Both of these accounts work
fine on eBay too.

Those are invalid as well. 99.99% of the free email accounts are known to ebay and they reject them unless a credit card is used. Ebay even has a street address verifier that verifies street addresses.
There may be a slight loophole when a free email service first comes online.

The three free email services mentioned above all continue to work well for me without ever placing a credit card on file with eBay.
All of my accounts were opened late this year. Also, these particular email services are not new online.
Only my primary selling ID has a credit card number on file; the rest of my User IDs do not. C'est la vie!
