I filed FVF 17 days after the auction ended since I never heard from the deadbeat bidder - as a result she was NARU'd. Now, 60 days later I get a money order in the mail from the NARU Deadbeat. Am I required to pay for a stamp to return the money order? I'm quite tempted to deposit the money order and then write her a personal check for the amount less the cost of a return stamp and my initial listing fee.

The rule of thumb I have learned from this group is, if you are not completing the sale, do not cash the money order.

I personally would not want to send my bank account routing number and checking account number to someone who could have a grudge against me.

Also, what if she did not cash, and claimed she never received your check, and you had to pay your bank to stop payment on the check to cover yourself.

Others do things differently, but I would pay the 37 cents to send it back and call the loss of listing fees a part of doing business, knowing I did my part in NARU'ing some deserving person.

leapfrogger,

You could send her an e-mail and state that the item is no longer available. Then, tell her that if she will send you a self-addressed stamped envelope you will be glad to send the money order back to her. I definately would not cash the money order. Hope that helps!

tell her that if she will send you a self-addressed stamped envelope you will be glad to send the money order back to her.

I like this in principle; however, as a firm adherent of the "once you touch it, give it final disposition" school of thought, I'd pony up the 37 cent stamp to return it to her.

If you still have the item why not ship it?

Also if you cash the money order even NARU deat beats can file fraud claims if you cash it. If you accept the money you are forced to removed the NPB complaint against her or she can and possibly will contact Ebay to appeal the NPB and get her account back.

So either ship the item if you got it or send her money order back unaltered at your expense.

Dead beats and NARU's we all know can be vindictive and they have a lot of options to screw you with.

If you don't want to complete the deal or maybe even unable to do so I would send her her money order back unless 37 cents will break you. What was the postmark on the envelope. Check that and see whan you buyer sent it. Who knows maybe that money order has been lying in some postal box for a while.

I would send the money back, but with the people I've been dealing with lately and hearing about, she may still claim fraud, and say she paid you, and never received the money order back.. so it may cost more than .37 cents, you may want to have it sent registered w/signature required back to her.

The poster didn't state the value of the money order but if it a fairly expensive one they may want to add insurance or a signature confirmation on it to guarentee it against loss. The buyer may try to create additional headaches by claiming the money order was never mailed back to him. It's a bit of extra money but may be worth it in the long run if the money order is high value.

As a related note: I just learned today that US postal money orders that are claimed to be lost require a $3 re-issue fee and a 30 day waiting period.

My advice is CYA & send it back with delivery confirmation. So it cost you a buck, at least you are covered from any possibility of a claim against you.

Thanks for your advice. I will send back the money order and let her know that the item sold when I relisted it.

The envelope was postmarked a few days before I rec'd it, so I know she sent it well after the fact.

she may still claim fraud, and say she paid you

So what if she does? As long as the money order hasn't been cashed by you, the claim is baseless.
