I am currently working on builing my own web site. The widgets I sell are mostly to men. Occasionally a woman, but mostly men.
My first thought when I was designing the web site was to make it clear that I was a woman, thinking that it may lure more business that way. But now I'm having second thoughts and am wondering if men would be more inclined to buy from a man than a woman??? The others sellers that sell the same widgets are also mainly men, so I am the minority in this area.
Just so you know, these are not "adult" items or anything like that. A good example would be power tools. Mainly men buy them, but would they be trustful of a woman and buy them from her??
I can make my web site non-genderish (is that a word?).
Any input from the men on here on weather or not you would trust buying something from a woman in a mans market or not.

To me, a non-gender site makes more sense.
When I buy, I am buying the product. The reputation of the seller, if it could be established would make more of a difference than deciding to buy from a man or woman.
I think it would make more sense for me to buy a power tool from a company, than a gender.
My vote is make your site more business like and less gender like.

I don't think your gender would matter and revealing is not a good idea. Then, I don't buy tools mail order, Sears & Home Depot are 20 from my house.

I guess it depends on the items you are selling, but if you are selling tools, my guess is that men would more likely buy from men. I would create the site and not include info that would suggest you are a man or a woman.

Not a man but as a graphics person I can give you one piece of advice... stay away from Red/Black color combinations. the highest percentage of people suffering from color blindness exists in men and this condition results in red being seen as black so when red text appears on a black background or the other way around... they see a big black box.
From a design and marketing standpont... sex sells, it even sells miter saws... you reaally want a popular site... look for pictures from the old pin up calendars and posters that the companies used to sen d out and use some of those images in your page design. Play the vintage pin-up images against your modern tools and have a little fun - make your site something that has great products and is visually memorable and people will book mark it and send it to friends.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

LOL, OK, now I am more confused that ever!
I do agree that sex sells! That was my whole thought originally.
And I'm not selling tools, I just used that as an example. My widgets are more sports related.
So come on guys, you're telling me (if I were selling power tools like in prof's link), that you wouldn't buy one from me if I had something like that up on my web site?????
My husband is saying go for the female looking web page because he thinks it will attract more men to the site.
But on the other hand, I do agree with a non-gender site too. Perhaps that would be more professional.
And then, there's Jacks suggestion! LOL Not sure about that one though.
I'm basing alot of my thought process from back when I used to work in the customer service industry in retail. (that sucked by the way) I think that the men were much kinder to the women than they were to the men. If they had a problem, they would rant and rave and swear to another man, but with me, they were much more calm and reasonable to deal with. (dealing with women is another story though LOL)
I guess I'm just thinking that they may be more pleasant to deal with if they know they are doing business with a woman???
