"Is it Broadway or is it eBay? The newest eBay commercials have just hit the airwaves. Directed by Academy Award winning director Sam Mendes, these commercials feature dancing straight out of Broadway and songs that will be in your head for the rest of the day. Check out the commercials airing now!"
--from the Ebay pages

Oh Lord we just saw one of the new commercials and in one word I can honestly say it was "CHEESY."

The newest ebay commercial clearly shows that ebay wants to be known for it's new items much more than used items. Every item is new and and it is shown as a store theme.

Thats funny because they just put out that memo not to long ago about getting back to their bread and butter "collectibles."

I am not really into new stuff that much. (Unless its stuff that HAS to be new) but for those that are, EBAY definetly is a better alternative than retail prices.

The new Easy To Buy ebay promotion is another indication of ebay's possibly wanting new stuff over old stuff.

Only BRAND NEW products that have never been used or re-manufactured that are sold exclusively using the Fixed Price format will be eligible to be included in the Easy to Buy promotion

With the level of advertising eBay stoops to it is no wonder the incidence of NPB's & other types of deadbeat bidders have increased. Who do they expect to attract with this nonsense?!

The problem I have been having lately is that after the auction ends the high bidders e-mail address is dead. I can say I usually don't sell new stuff but used and antiques. I think the stupid commercials are bring in stupid bidders. My blocked bidder list keeps getting longer and longer.

Personally I think that targeting the "NIB Retail Customer" is exactly what ebay needs to be doing. Collectibles people already know ebay well. By bringing in those customers that are not collectors but are looking, say, for electronics or appliances, inntroducingthem to ebay can bring new customers who may just stumble in to collecting via ebay.

Example - I'm not a glass fan, don't collect it, have enjoyed watching the pieces here but it's not my thing. Yesterday I saw some plates that I loved so I decided to come on to ebay last night to see if I could find them - instead I found some really cool black amethyst stuff that I am watching and debating getting instead as well as a set of fiesta I found for everday use. I never would have found or thought of either of these lines had it not been for seeking what would be considered a new store or retai item.

As for the cheesiness - I do believe that Ebay needs to start moving away from the musical theme and find a more mature and legit way to advertise.

I think electronics and appliances are the worst thing to buy on ebay. Usually the local merchants have a product and price that are close to ebay's price and when the s/h is added there is not much reason to buy them on ebay. PLUS, the factor of possibly returning a defective or damaged item, it makes it a no-brainer to buy these types of items locally.

One reason that I believe ebay wants the new and non-refurbished goods is the PayPal insurance thingie. The odds of a new item being defective are much less than on a used item.

I guess I'm just weird but I like the commercials and think there funny as hell...you know you want that Ebay necklace (bling bling) rofl. They make it very clear if you can't find it on the stores it's at Ebay.

Ace- then you obviously have not done much price comparision. I saved about $200 on a DVD recorder, another $100 on an external hard drive, god only knows how much on a DVD recorder... Paid $40 each with shipping for two new in box Panasonic four head VCRs and $50 for a multiregion DVD player and if I remember correctly, $75 for a dvd/vhs combo player. The only way I am going to find better prices is if I buy wherehouse lots and I just don't need 50 vcrs. I am an electronics nut and am always buying new items and even with shipping I always save a great deal over retail and have yet to have a problem with a single one of the items I purchased. I remember when the Ibooks came out, I purchsed one from an ebay seller when every retailer in LA was quoting a one month wait. I paid $200 under retail which included Fed Ex delivery.

Yes you have to be smart - I've been looking for a G5 and last week found someone selling the $3k model with a 23" monitor for $1800 - all feedback was as a buyer, account was a week old - Definately BS auction. There are going to be cams in every catagory but if you do the research, you are smart, and you listen to your gut you can find great deals on electronics on ebay.

I believe that most of the bad mouthing of Ebay comes from people that buy and sell used or antique stuff. Just look at all the boards. Sometimes its so bad that if I was a new customer looking for a used or antique item I would be scared to death to sign up and bid on Ebay. Maybe the wheels at Ebay think about that when make new ads.
