At the estate sale I went to I purchased a game. I have no idea what it is and if there is someone on this board that is German and can translate this it would be helpful. Another question if I put this game on eBay USA and the title is in German will it appear on any foreign boardsin search.

Here is the title: KARNOFFEL (two dots above the O). Then underneath it is written
DAS KARTENSPIEL DER LANDSKNECHTE
tHE CARD GAME OF THE LANSQUENETS.
PIATNIK WIEN.

Don't know if this helps, but the translation is something like this...

KARNOFFEL The cards game of the country servants, The card game of the LANSQUENETS. PIATNIK VIENNA

Or another translation is:

KARNOFFEL the PACK OF CARDS of the LAND FARMHANDS, THE CARD GAME OF THE
LANSQUENETS. PIATNIK VIENNA

In last line, "Wien" is German word for Vienna.

That sounds about right Dad as the pictures shows these weird people which could be farmhands or something. Does anyone else just buy something because it is strange looking? I do it all the time..

I also purchased a book in German and its about Asterix. It is signed by two people
Rene Goscinny and UDERZO. As I understand UDERZO created Asterix and Rene did the writing. Then there was a loose card in the book from the book publisher. I think I will have to research more before I put this on. I hope it is a treasure.

According to the webpage UDERZO also did some captain marvel drawings...

Karnoffel is an old game a little like Bridge

Do the cards have the german trumps? I have a set from Switzerland that have acorns, flowers, shields and bells as the trumps. There's a special game they play with them called Jass.

If you list it, just make sure that you put in both "Karnoffel" and "Karnoeffel" somewhere in the auction. The latter spelling is how it would appear when NOT using an umlaut (the two dots that German uses over the vowels a, o and u).

Not lurkyloo on eBay

Hi all,

I'm pretty sure the name of the maker of your game is Platnik, not Piatnik. I Googled it but the only page I came up with is in German. I got to it by clicking a link in the first one.

Anyway, here are the links...

http://boardgames.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.platnik.com/

Wish I could be of more help.

Edited to add I had a card game from them I sold last year, which is how come I recognized the name...

Some of the cards are cut and colored others are in a big sheet uncolored. There is a upside down heart, bell, acorn and a right side up heart. as all I can see. The others are cut in the game and wrapped with cellophane and since the game hasn't been out of the box I hate to remove them. Very strange pictures. I am going to see those site you game me. Thanks dragonmom.

Thanks all. Imagine if I had to research this by myself, it would have taken a long time and everyone here is so helpful.

There are 48 uncut uncolored cards with very strange designs and there are more cards cut that are colored can't count them as they are sealed. Thanks that was great reading. I can't believe that this game dates back to 1462. See what happens when I branch away from costume jewelry. I am sure the ones that are lurking say is she dumb....

No my game isn't from 1462, the game itself is the oldest board game. My is the new version. I wish it was that old. I think my books I bought will do better since they are autographed.

Here's some new info:

Kartenspiel means; It is a card game like Skat, Whist, Tarock,Bridge,Romme,Canasta or
Patience.
All those Games came original from Korea and China around 12 Jh,and went to Europa around 13 Jh.
But I can not find anything about the card game of the Lansquenets.
Landsknechte means; It is like a farmer or person who takes care of a farm or a piece of propetie.
Well ,I think this ia a card game played still traditionally by those people in Wien.
I have no idea how you play it.
PIATNIK WIEN;Is A place, area or a park in the big city of Wien.
Wien is the capitol city from Austria.

Libra, so the costume jewelry wasn't what you hoped?

I hopefully will be buying a huge rubbermaid tub full of costume jewelry later this week. It is left over from a large estate sale and I cannot wait to go through it again.

The woman who has it is getting married and she and her fiance are selling all the belongings of his late wife and mother. The wife died over 20 years ago and there are some very nice pieces there.

She had 3 sales and would put out more pieces each time, I bought a good deal at each sale. After the 3rd sale she decided to call in a dealer and just clean out the rest without digging out a little at a time. I didn't hold out much hope for the jewelery but gave her my business card and said I would be interested in buying it all if we could strike a deal. She called me Friday and we are meeting the middle of the week. Wish me luck.
Life is only as good or bad as you make it.

Libra - I play a Swiss card game with my husband and friends called "Jass". THe game is sort of like euchre. It is played with German cards - instead of the suits we are accustomed to,it uses acorns, roses, shields and bell suits and the names on the face cards are: Ace, Konig, Ober, Under. I think Switzerland is the only place this game is played, but the cards in your set may be the German cards..here's a scan of what they look like:

I am hoping that putting it in international sales will put this out there. Thanks Lattefor2.

Neglus. I had a deck similar to that. Cards were beautiful but I disposed of them because I had them in my mall space and nobody bought them. Darn. My cards are very crude. But I have an acorn, bell, heart and upside down heart. The cards are smaller they are 3 x 4 inches. Believe it or not I am cleaning my eBay room and everything is piled on my scanner. Shucks.

Rarrfile-Lucky you. Be sure you tell us about it. I love to hear jewelry stories. I bought a few items. But nothing to write home about. I bought a necklace that is all small black glass iridescent beads. It has 10 strands with a few pearls scattered throughout Made in Italy. It has the most beautiful clasp on it. The other jewelry was some massive pendants that weighed a ton.

Dad- Where did you find all that information. I had been searching a long time and couldn't find anything. Thanks

Fluffy...See how important this thread is for me and the rest of us. This isn't an antique just a board game I purchased but oh the information. We are in our own little world here and now we have been to Germany.
