Here you go...
A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a blog is a "blogger." Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in cronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominantly.

I started blogging at the beginning of November. My godson showed me how, setting me up with a free account at www.livejournal.com . Probably wouldn't have done it without his help--I was interested, but I am an old technopeasant
While it is true that your journal can be read by others in the normal way of things, some people opt to have their journal be "Friends Only" so that only people on their friends list can read it--if you don't put anyone on your friends list, then no one will be able to read it but yourself.
On the other hand, you don't have to show your real name, you can use a screen name like you do here on Vendio, so no one knows who you are unless you tell them. And some of the comments others make on your journal entries can be fun & interesting.
**EDITED TO SAY: Oh, & I don't know about other blogging places, but Live Journal also has "communities" that let you discusses things of interest with other bloggers--for instance, I belong to a book community called "Book Worm."

The Google free toolbar/popup killer has a blog option that makes blogging easier.
I remember several years ago there was an earlier attempt at blogging by using yellow post-it notes at appeared on websites that only other posters could see. The idea was to use to notes to warn other posters or give opinions on items, etc. The idea never took off and there may have been legal issues back then.

They are also great way to spam! I just read the other day that spammers are using blogs as a way to advertise products, etc. Blogs are picked up by the search engines, so it allows them to get "free advertising". It's up to the blogger to remove the posts, so it can be easier to just let the posts stand rather than constantly deleting the spam.

Oh BNera
You are so right - and so wrong!!
Mine is much smaller blog, but there are excellent ones out there.
Some are very self indulgent and others are outreach pages. But then again all websites that are personal pages are a bit of a vanity plate.
OTOH, there is nothing wrong with that!!!

There are also photoblogs -- some of them are fantastic -- and there's a really useful site where you can see a list of current photoblogs at www.photoblogs.org.
(Can't remember how to make a link, sorry.)I highly recommend looking through some of them when you are in between holiday tasks. Many of them will brighten your day (and question whether you should upgrade your digital camera this Christmas!).
