Remember, any email purporting to be from eBay that has a clickable link is to be treated as hostile.

Even real email from eBay.

The email is bogus, obviously. However, the name isn't necessarily an indication of a mis-spelling. As a Children's Librarian, I have been noticing over the past 20 years that more and more people are mangling perfectly good names in some sort of desperate attempt to make them "special."

I have seen "Mary" spelled the way the sender of that email did.

I have seen Karen spelled "Karan," "Karin," "Caren," & "Caran."

I have seen Jonathan spelled "Johnathon," and "Jonathin."

I have seen Richard spelled "Richherd."

Every time we start a new story time session, there are sure to be at least 5 kids whose names have been "personalized." Totally ridiculous.

I was just talking to a friend the other day about the football players' names! First names of Priest?! Lawyer?! I think the made-up names are a bit better than those two I just mentioned. Someone should help those mommies in delivery to come up with a spellable, prounceable name. Antwan? Antwon? Antowan? Gimme a break. They are saddled with a problem name the rest of their lives.

Utah is awful for the made-up names, usually combining daddy and mommy's names. The worst we ever saw was a wonderful female harpist for the Utah Symphony name ShruDeLi Ownby. When I told friends about it there, they thought I was kidding--until one day I actually met ShruDeLi's sister! She told me where the name came from, but it escapes me now.

I think names like that work okay in the local culture, whatever your local culture is, but as soon as you try to move out into the big wide world, they label you or your parents as ignorant. I know I sound harsh.

I had a cousin (deceased) whose name was Missouri Jones, she was born in Des Moines, IA. Go figure. The funny part is she married John Bailey & lived in the suburbs of KC, MO most of her life.

When I was a child my aunt had a friend called Margie. One day I heard her husband call her Oleo. Later I asked my aunt why he teased her like that and she said, "Her name is Oleo Margarine." She was born just about the time Oleo was introduced and her mother heard the name and thought it sounded pretty but had no idea what it was. All her friends called her Margie but her family always called her Oleo.

I have some friends that named their daughter Justice and the name really fits her. I couldn't see calling her anything else. It would be kinda funny if when she grows up if she becomes a judge or how about a peace officer, then she would be the Justice of the peace.

I once knew a guy that was named Cash Dollar. His dad worked at a bank.

And then there was the poor girl I knew in middle school that was named Dianne Rea. Boy oh boy her parents weren't thinking when they named her.

As far as the email goes, I got the same email and I just deleted it, knowing that it was BS.

One of my favorite business names was a shop in Las Vegas called Harry Brown Furs. An orthopedic surgeon named Dr. Bender. Landscaping firm called Maas and Grassli. I have a whole file of these, kept over the last 30 years. We live in a strange and wonderful world.

Some people chose their own names, like the guy who lives in my county who changed his name to Vlad Dracul. I'm a police
dispatcher and everytime I have to say his name on the radio it's hard to keep my voice steady.

Did any of you get the eBay spoof that tells you to fill out a security form or "If not, your account may behave unnormally and errors may occur without notification."?

I am surprised no one makes a utility to spot grammatical and spelling errors in spoof emails! They might be able to catch a few more innocents in their nets.

I knew a lady named Virginia.
Everyone called her Virgin for short.
But they didn't call her that for long.

Speaking of Virginna or actually Virginia..and very embarrassing to a 13 year old girl... I once did a report on Thomas Jefferson's Notes on Virginia - however, my unintentional slip entitled the report "Thomas Jefferson's Notes on Virgina". That was a very long time ago and you can see that I have never forgotten it. I think it scarred me for life. However, maybe his notes on that subject matter would have been a lot more interesting than his notes on Virginia.
