I sold a video to someone in Spain about a month ago-he requested my bank account number so he could transfer the money-yea like Im gonna give someone my bank account number over the internet. In the last 3 weeks I won 2 auctions from people in Germany. In both instances they both gave me their bank account numbers to transfer the money to.
In the first instance I ask her for her address and said I would send the money to.
Then informed her I didnt think she should be giving strangers her bank account numbers. Now yesterday I won another auction from Germany and again she gave me her bank account number to transfer the money to.I now assume this is standard practice in Europe.I assume I will have to go to my bank to transfer the money-has anyone ever done this,do they get your bank account number and is there a fee attached to this?

bank wiretransfer would cost you-your bank would charge you 35 dollars and the recipient has to pay as well, say 5 dollars.
this is USA protocol.
now if someone overseas wire you money and your bank is not a big bank say bac,wfc etc,and it has to go thru another bank, you will have to pay fees to your bank and that intermediate bank.
so you should call your bank and find out what the fee is for incoming wire and ask your bidder to pay for that fee.
As for how safe it is to give out your bank account number,i would say it is safe, there is no way they can debit your account from germany or japan or anywhere.
but nigerian etc can use your bank account number, routing number etc and take it to a nigerian print shop which can print bank checks and use them for mischief.
of course like all good citizens, you balance your checkbook each month and will report fraudulent activities to your bank which will nullify the transactions.

You give people your bank account number everytime you give them a check. So what exactly is your concern ?
But I would suggest they use Bidpay since you will probably be charged a wire transfer fee for receiving the money

Just to give you an idea of how commonly bank transfers are used - it is the preferred method of payment on eBay Australia. Rather than plugging your PayPal address in on the Payment page - you plug in your bank account info.

The problem with international transfers as mentioned earlier, are the fees. My bank charges $15 for me to recieve one.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

same here,no fee for ACH.
i went to holywood video to check out some tapes, and you should see what they want on application form-your ss,birthdate, driver license,cc,phone ,address.any clerk can sell these data to crooks .
