Hi, this never happened before. Since last night I am having a problem asccessing web pages, when I sign on I get my compuserve home page, read emails then go to my favorites and click to come here, go to ebay or paypal. all I kept getting is Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. The page might be temporarily unavailable. I thought it was just a temporary thing, first thing this morning I tried the same thing and it happened and it is still happening. then I thought I would not try to link from my favorites, and typed web addressed into my browser address bar, and the same thing happened, and it is still happening. I am able to read and send mail. When I received an item purchase from ebay I tried linking onto the hyper-link to see the auction, and I am able to access that way. This seems crazy the only way to get on line is trough hyper-links in emails. I ran a virus scan and everything is fine,I emptied cache, cleaned internet files, called compuserve and they blamed it on internet explorer spam emails???. When I get off line (I never log off, I am the only one using a computer)then sign on again or if I do a restart or shut down I have to go through the email thing again. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
One more thing I almost forgot, when I do get on line and get that action cancelled I can go to internet options go to the advanced tab and use set defaults, then go to program and set default and it works but once off, it does not remain set. I am leaving the computer on all night hopefully it will still stay connected to the net.

IF you have verified for sure that you are really connected to the Internet while this is happening...do you use a proxy?

Do you know that your mail is actually being sent and not queued for later sending?

Did you reboot? Can you get into netscape? If you can try using that and see what happens. I have both on my computer but I never use netscape just have it hanging around in case something happens with IE. This is all I can tell you but I will bet someone here will have the answer for you soon. Good Luck

Check to make sure that the pages in your favorite are on line. Maybe you wore working off line and it didn't switch back. That happens to me sometimes but you can tell. If you use the favorite drop down box are the pages in black printing or gray printing. If gray the pages are off line.

please go down the board and read my post to Libra63 about the Backweb agent question they were asking.

If you will ask at the Spybot forum I'm sure they will help you in a heartbeat AND know the answer.

First, download and run spybot though.

It worked, it worked I am back in busines! if this is not the greatest place in the entire world wide web!thank you all,
fluffy I knew my mail was being sent because I received replies to the emails I wrote. Libra, I remember a long while back you wrote to sonmeone suggesting they have netscape as a just in case, that is when I downloaded it, I forgot until you mentioned it here, changed browsers and the same thing was happening even after re-booting.
Gassgirl I followed your direction, went to spybot, followed your instructions before I posed the same question, I downloaded the spyware detection and boy was I in for a shock, it even gave me the names of these programs and what they do and how they affect your computer, almost every one of them interfered with internet exolorer. Since the beginning of the week I was getting Instant Messages constantly popping up and they were all from porn solicitations.I mentioned that to Compuserve and I believe that is what he meant about spam affecting my browser, but I do believe he should have elaborated on it. Spybot, is now going to be part of my daily routine also. thanks again, I know I can sleep tonight.

Can I get the web address for Spybot? I've tried a couple of variations on it but can't get anywhere.

Roadsmith...I got my copy directly from the AOL download library. It's the program they recommend. I think you can get it from downloads.com. If not try to Google "spybot search and destroy". I was also surprised at what was on my computer the first time I ran it. When you run it the first time, you will see about 20 items that have to do with Backweb Lite alone. Many of these items will be in your windows registry. It would be dangerous to edit these entries out manually, but Spybot will get them out in a few seconds with no harm to your computer.
The program will show a list of all the problems it found. Next to each of these problems will be a box with a checkmark already entered as a prompt to fix the problem. There will be several boxes on the Backweb entries that are not checked for removal because some people have a legitimate use for this application and don't want it removed. You will need to manually check all these boxes before you click on the button to fix the problems.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

what do you mean "you can't get anywhere"?

you want to run the advanced model!

check under settings: settings

then check off the blocks advanced mode and anything else you might use.

Under Bug Report, I have them all checked except the last 4.

Then go to File Sets under settings. Check all EXCEPT registry! Don't check it unless you are Bill Gates II. It will mess your computer up by deleting things you need!

THEN run that.

Advanced model comes with:

SELECT ALL ITEMS and FIX ALL ITEMS

Otherwise you could spend a half hour manually checking box after box.

Ok, you got all that?

(first you might want to set your settings to always prompt you for an update on SB. they do frequent updates and you need them! And you might want to create a backup first - that is also included in SB.)

NOW, go to IMMUNIZE. I LOVE immunize. It puts a block on bad cookies going onto your computer. After you set it up and run it and everything, go back to your IE from menu/tools/internet options/privacy/edit cookies and LOOK what a list you have there now!

you also want to download SPYWARE BLASTER! You probably will have to go back to the SB website to download it (I've tried the other downloads they had but they didn't do much for me so don't bother basically) and download Spyware Blaster by Javacools. THIS runs on the immunize page that says as a link: You have JavaCools spyware blaster installed, yada yada click here to run it.

YES you want to run it!
Sometimes it takes a few to load it up, it will open in another window and you can do that while spybot is running.

I have my preferences checked to after I run it, it shows only the items that are NEW in RED and I then check all and fix.

I haven't read up on the three recommended at the bottom of the IMMUNIZE page but I do have "lock IE start page" checked.

NOW, if you ever have any problem with your computer, run all that (it's not so bad, takes only a few and cleans up your computer great! but then I also run window washer and bleach my computer) and after you run those, go back to the SB page and download, yes I'm sorry, one more - HiJackThis.

This is a GREAT program to get rid of things you don't want and to basically lock your settings. Realplayer update? Fix this. Messenger? Fix this. and it creates backups so you can restore. This program allows you to see what is running in the background of your computer silently. I have had my toolbar Hijacked and have had comet cursor installed without my knowing it and HiJackThis allows you to fix it with a click!

The forum at SB (very newbie friendly I might add, they get lectured on that!) will require you to post your HiJackThis log before they can help you fix your computer. They are WONDERFUL over there!

Folks, really, I can not tell you what cr*p is trying to download on your computer anytime you browse web pages! These simple FREE programs and the Google toolbar (for pop ups) will keep your relatively safe when browsing.

You don't really need HiJackThis unless you are either having problems with your computer OR you just want to make sure you DON'T have unwanted stuff running in the background.

I promise - only one more reply and then I'm off to sleep.

lattefor2, you say your tools/internet options/security won't stay set.

go into Start/Control Panel/Internet Options & set your defaults from there also.

I think that's how they are set better/more permanently/etc but I don't know that for sure. But I know what you mean, they used to reset themselves like that.

(ps) Jack? You said your computer runs slow? You might want to run SpyBot.

One thing that helped me "clean" my computers when I was having trouble with my wireless network was to clear out the start menu: (this applies to "XP" only)Under the "start menu" hit the "RUN" application and type in "msconfig"...click on the "startup" tab and uncheck all the boxes except your anti-virus program (for Norton's that is:"navapw32"and then "apply" and "ok" and restart your computer. Everytime you start-up you will get a message that you changed the "start configuration" but i just "x"it to close it (there are two windows that will have to be "x'd" and ignore. You don't need all the stuff that runs in the background and can always start a program you want to run from the desktop or start menu. The "xp" isntructions say you can gradually add things back to the start menu but I don't know why anyone would want more *crap* running than is necessary!

Tools is on top, File Edit View Favorites Tools Help. If you don't have it right click on a blank space and make sure everything has a check. Darn this might not work as I don't use AOL.

Aol - bless your heart.

Go down to the left hand part of your screen. At the bottom of the toolbar (next to start) and click on the blue "E" and open internet explorer and then you will find the toolbar you need at the top of the page. If it's not there then start/programs/Internet Explorer.

File Edit View Favorites Tools Help

Tools.

But this shouldn't effect your signing into Ebay again, just put in another password? No big deal. I do it all the time. You CAN edit your configurations to save the VD, Ebay etc cookies and not delete them.

Give up AOL for sure! Really, you won't miss it after a day.

Edited to add: You can also get to it by Start/Control Panel/Internet Options.

Hi, I just got up I must of needed the sleep after being tied up in knots with my computer problem. Classicrock, I have compuserve which is a division of AOL, my toolbar says access or preferences, under preferences you will see WWW click there and that will give you your Internet options and you can reset cookies there. Libra now my Netscape works fine in case I ever have to change over. Glassgirl, again right on the money when I was checking my ebay sales another porn pop-up came on, Neglus thanks for the tip on the start up menu after I pack I am going to do that and also go to hijack this. Everyone this is so important to do, even sparkz said how surprising it was to find out all the stuff that gets in there, this is so important to do and save you time, grief, and maybe some hard earned money down the line. Thank you all again. I feel like I just got a Christmas Present.

downloaded sypbot and I can't believe what was on there 184 bad then I did the update and again I ran it and there were more. Now lets see if this will help. What I want to know now is it says to uninstall spybot does that mean to go into my program and do just what it says? Before I hit that uninstall I want to make sure. Thanks glassgirl that was really simple.

i experienced the same problem a few months back. Here's the solution:

Go to:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

and download the free version of ad-aware.

After downloading it, run the program. It will clear out the junk that is causing the quirkiness on your browser. It worked great.

ad aware is ok but it doesn't update itself like Spybot does.

I wouldn't be messing with the msconfig either unless you're very very sure of what your're doing.
