Hi. I need suggestions. I am gonna list auctions tonight and I can have them close the day after Xmas or list them for 10 days and have them close the Monday after Christmas. What do you suggest?

Not doing it.

Seriously, there is a very high chance of a free listing day next week, plus bidding will be down somewhat on Wednesday and Thursday - many people do have better things to do.

It's just a good week to skip it and wait.

Why? "Xmas" has been used since the 1550's.

Etymology: X (symbol for Christ, from the Greek letter chi (X), initial of Christos Christ) + -mas (in Christmas)
Date: 1551

In the past few years, I have sold lots and lots of stuff the week after X-mas, I guess people have some gift money to spend. I am listing tomorrow and then not again till after the holidays. People know it is too late to ship to arrive Christmas...

I'm going to try to list some items...hopefully, folks will be wanting to spend those eBay gift certificates they got for Christmas! By the way, I thought that was a nifty marketing idea that eBay came up with...let's see if it works!

bunnicula, I've heard that justification, but it doesn't wash. There is no need to take CHRIST out of Christmas and put in a letter X (no matter what the reason).

Just a pet peeve.

Gawd is that petty. Sounds like someone needs a little more excitement in their life like watching jello mold.

I'd better learn to read the whole thread - I agree with Bunni here! calling Christmas xmas does not take christ out of christmas!

Since the term "Xmas" originated in a time period that was highly religious, your argument that the term involves taking Christout of the equation is specious.

Not specious in the least. Just because the term was used in the past by people who had a meaning for it, does not justify its use now.

No one who uses it now thinks that they are offering a religious greeting. Today's meaning is a secularized, politically correct message. This "justification" is known by very little, if it is even accurate.

Bottom line, it gains nothing and hurts everything. So if you care about the true reason for the season, why use it?

Our language is full of words & phrases that no one gives a thought to the origin of. If we were to stop using them simply because of that...

Another silly, specious argument.

Good-bye. Oh, wait--I'm not allowed to say that, am I? Somewhere along the line "God" was taken out of "good-bye."

I listed twenty items with BIN during the morning hours of 12/20/03 and six items sold within hours. Most of the other items have high counter hits.

I've found from past experience that items listed throughout the holiday season do well.

I feel that many customers have the free time to shop for wanted items that are not intended for Christmas presents.

If a free listing day comes along so be it but I'm not waiting for eBay to decide on a FLD. If they have one I'll just list more for sell.

I intend to list 250 items today.

Fixed Price listings are doing great for me. I only have afew auctions. I can see why alot of powersellers used the FP only. You can move your inventory alot faster.

Now is a good time to list. Counts are down to 8.6 mil and dropping...less competition = more sales.

I was going to wait until after Christmas to list. Really I was. I tried to stop my finger from clicking the mouse to relist items I didn't sell, but I was no match for the power of eBay. I did save some for free listing day, but way too many people sell on that day so I wanted to get a jump start.

I hate to remark on the Christmas thing, but again I can't help myself. Christmas as we celebrate it now is based on pagan celebrations so I doubt putting the X in takes anything out of it. Where was Santa the night Christ was born, which according the experts was anytime between August and October?

Some legends claim that the Christian "Christmas" celebration was invented to compete against the pagan celebrations of December. The 25th was not only sacred to the Romans but also the Persians whose religion Mithraism was one of Christianity's main rivals at that time. The Church eventually was successful in taking the merriment, lights, and gifts from the Saturanilia festival and bringing them to the celebration of Christmas.

If you are interested, the history channel has a great site on the history of Christmas. Santa, too!

I'll save the rest for the RoundTable.

Happiest of holidays to everyone no matter how you celebrate!

Hard to believe that people who make their living selling stuff made in countries that do not believe in Christ or celebrate Christmas get all twisted out of shape when someone uses Xmas!
Seller, take the week off enjoy, give thanks, help others.

I've closed down - buyers may not need a rest but I do - and the holidays give me time to revamp for the coming year.
