I guess I am missing something here. Why does eBay now require that you sign in if you want to look at completed items?
I don't understand how that benefits the company.
But then I also have never understood why eBay continues to miss such a terrific opportunity to publish the ultimate price guide by simply using its completed item listings.
The company could sell a book with annual averages or publish monthly updates or sell access to updates on the Web.
Why don't they do that? Aside from being a heavy user, I am a stockholder.

Marshall,
Remember when we talked about this on rec.antiques years ago? eBay's finally catching up. They're selling access to their data warehouse of completed auction data going back years. Book? Don' need no steenkin' book!
Likewise, us lucky users are now required to sign in to view completed items to try to discourage clever programmer lads from snarfing this data for free. How do I know this can be done? Simple. We have a program that archives all *my* completed auctions: text, pictures and all. It's not much of a stretch to capture all such data for a category.

***Sign In for Completed Items Search***
Date: 12/11/03 Time: 01:26:44 PM PST
In the next few days, eBay members will be required to sign in to eBay before viewing the results of a Completed Items search. Completed Items data can be valuable information that is generated by the eBay Community, so it will be available only to registered members of the eBay Community. This change will take place on the U.S. site in the next few days, and on international eBay sites early next year.
If you are already signed in to eBay on your computer, you won't notice any difference when you view Completed Items. If you haven't signed in, you will be prompted to do so, and then your Completed Items search results will be presented as usual. Non-registered members will need to register before being able to view the results of their search.
Regards,
eBay

It seems as if eBay want you to sign in for everything these days. Yesterday, I went to delete some items I had been "watching", and had to sign in before they were deleted.

If you have the eBay toolbar, you can just type the item name or item number in the search box and go -- no need to sign in. It's the most convenient thing eBay has going. I love it.

Everyone has spyware on their computer. This past weekend I had a wake up call. I down loaded spybot, yes that is spyware, Back web agent lite, spyware, Back web agent, spyware also. This is something we don't need on the computer so I think it is time we wake up and delete it. Everyone wants to know what we are looking at and I for one am not going to give it to them.
You know I did download spybot ran it found out what was on my computer deleted the ones they said. Now I am getting more pop ups than I ever had before, anyone have an explination for that?

Libra, I was thinking the same thing too. But its useless. They are going to track you one way or another. Even Microsoft for all their innovations - I dont want the computer to think ahead of me. At times, I think thats a pig-headed attitude, because it does makes things easier, but mostly i feel "why cant they let me be in control on my own computer?"
But thats what they get paid to do, ya know? All of them are trying to stay one step ahead of the other. And they do that with harvesting data and thinking they've got it figured out what users want.
Toollady: I dont know, but I dont think they collect any personal information about you per se. At least that is what their privacy policy promises. Its all just data. So why care then?

Neroter,
The ebay toolbar doesn't just track you on ebay. It has the capability to track you where ever you travel on the net, just by having it installed on your computer.
That's just a little too much data that Ebay doesn't need.
