Hi all,

I sold a 1946 encyclopedia set at Ebay auction a few weeks ago. The winning bidder lives in Australia. I informed him that shipping 100lbs to Australia would cost over $600, so he said he would arrange shipment.

He PayPal'd me the $150 winning bid money and said someone would be by to pick up the package. Here now 3 weeks later, this huge box sits silent by my front door. The buyer is not responding to emails.

I have alot of time invested in this transaction, so I hate to just send his money back and relist it.

Any thoughts?

Have you emailed the buyer to ask just when his package will be picked up?

Personally I would refund his Paypal payment and relist. Making sure to note no International Bidders! If they are not answering you it is not a good sign. You sure don't want extra fees from Paypal for chargebacks.

Can you do a second chance offering to the next highest bidder?

I had another thought. What about surface shipping? If he has waited 3 weeks to arrange pick up, what's 6 more weeks for actual door delivery. It hopefully would be significantly less than $600.

The only mistake on your part was to accept a P.P. payment for this. I would only take a bidpay payment as I would not have to worry about chargebacks, complaints, refunds.
Its amazing how fast this parcel would be picked up.
Anything over $50.00 bucks its bidpay only. Paypal will look after itself and you have to do the same thing.
I find this works well for overseas sales.

Why not wait it out? If the buyer was from Australia it may take a while for him to arrange a shipping service. It does not bode well that he does not answer your emails though.

How long have you been waiting to hear from your bidder? People are sometimes away from their computers.

I personally am not hasty to relist - things usually work out.

Three weeks does seem kinda long, but maybe not by Austrailian standards.

Dont lose all your documentation of him requesting you to hold the item and arrange shipment, ,w hatever you do! If he has requested his own shipping method and you agreed, I cant really see paypal doing a chargeback for him. (Well they shouldnt anyway)
