I am clueless when it comes to video games, and my little boy is now wanting one for his birthday (he couldn't understand why Santa didn't bring him one, but he didn't ask LOL )...

I am going to get the Sony Playstation 2, but have a question on the games. I was looking at eBay, and there are some games which the sellers say are for PS1, but can be played on PS2. Is this accurate with all the PS1 games, or just certain ones?

being still a kid, I guess I can answer the question.. heh.

all Playstation 1 games can be play on Playstation 2.. because they made it backwards compatible.

although the playstation 2 games can't be played on playstation 1.

Playstation 2 games are generally better though. in terms of graphics, sound, etc. etc. but you can find lots and lots of cheap Playstation 1 game selling for next to dirt. and there are some good games for your son.

although depends on his age.

I'll suggest some fun shooting game (nothing with blood or violence) I forgot the name of it.. but its fun for all ages really. course you gotta buy the gun to hook up to the playstation.

if I can ever remember the name of that o' fun shooting game for the family.. i'll let you know. heh

As Yoda said, the PS1 Games can be played on the PS/2.

HOWEVER, there is a compatibility thing when it comes to the memory cards. If you play PS2 games, you need a PS2 Memory card. If you play PS1 games on your PS2, you will need a PS1 memory card. The memory cards are not interchangable, even though they look alike.

Buy just the PS2 system, but get at least one of each kind of memory card so you can save those old games too.

thanks, guys!!

I was hoping you would show up, replay! Do you sell any of the PS games?

On the memory cards...so if I buy a PS2, it obviously comes with a memory card - so I just need to buy a memory card for PS1, correct? Or are there different types of memory cards?

I am VERY technically-challenged, so appreciate the help! LOL My little boy is 6, and is a train fanatic, so I have been slowly learning all about boy toys...I can now tell you almost every part of a train

He didn't ask Santa for a PS2 - he only asked for trains...and now wonders why he didn't get one...KIDS! LOL

I wanted to add to the info given. There have been some compatability issues with the blue bottomed disc playstation one games. IE Final Fantasy Chronicles. Otherwise you should have no problems.

I do not think the PS2 comes with any memory cards by default.

My 4 year old likes to play PS1 Crash Bandicoot games. Available new and in used stores around the area we live, and probably get good deals at half.com if not eBay. (See, I made this Post eBay related)

For young kids, I think some of the high graphic and options of many PS2 games can sometimes be a little much, although they pick things up pretty quickly, especially if they see other people playing it.

My youngest was 3 when we got our first Video Game and he was a little frustrated even with the simple games. Now at 4 and 5 he navigates around the menus almost as well as his older siblings. I think it helps him to see what others do, and lots of times asks for help if he gets stuck and needs to get past some obstacle he has trouble with.

http://ps2.ign.com might have some information about games and what they offer.

One of our family favorites is GT3, using the Force Feedback Steering Wheel.

I do not know that my 4 year old was ever very successful at GT3, but us adults need to have some fun too, don't we?

Good Luck.

So you know, the memory cards are mostly used to save games.

It is not necessary on any, or at least not most games to have a memory card to play a game.

The memory card lets you save a game and come back later where you left off, and is used for other things especially on the PS2 to save replays of what you have done, and ....

When you have gotten through some of the levels of a game, it is nice to "not have to start all over" when you come back after shutting it off.

An example on GT3, you can buy cars, and modify cars with your race winnings.

You can save your money, race history, and cars purchased on a memory card. This way you do not need to start over from the beginning every time.
