Do sewing patterns qualify for Media Mail rates?

According to USPS.com:

"Media Mail™ service is a cost efficient way to mail books, sound recordings, recorded video tapes, printed music, and recorded computer-readable media (such as CDs, DVDs, and diskettes). Media Mail can not contain advertising except for incidental announcements of books. The maximum weight for Media Mail is 70 lbs. "

Patterns do not have any advertising and could be construed as reading materials. Correct or not?

If in doubt call the P.O.
I would think any printed material would qualify!

I would think that sewing patterns would be treated the same as software. They both serve the same basic purpose.

Crossword puzzles, pattern books, poster books, iron-on transfer books, and cut-out books which do not consist of reading matter as well as publications containing advertising are not acceptable in the mails at the Media Mail rate of postage. They are subject to the applicable Standard Mail, Parcel Post, or Bound Printed Matter rates when mailed.

You just know that 90% of that type of stuff is sent via Media Mail. If you do send it out via Media Mail wrap it very securely so it doesn't break open in transit.

And you wonder why the PO opens Media Mail?

Exactly, Captain. I was just at the post office and had a conversation with the clerk about Media Mail. She said that the massive misuse of Medai Mail by eBay sellers is the reason that Media packages are now being occasionally opened.

Hi all,

Thanks Gousainc for the post. I've sold some of those things and was puzzled how to ship. My favorite postie said just send them media/standard mail but I'm glad to have the info in case I end up at another clerk's window.

I wonder if this applies to magazines? My least-favorite postie gave me a hard time the last time I sent mags. Said they weren't Bound Printed Matter, that BPM was for catalogues.

I ship Media often and everytime the clerk/post master hands me this yellow paper to read saying they will / can inspect my packages at will.

If I'm shipping something not Media, I will be guilty of a Federal Crime.

I suspect that she has already done so herself (inspected) and should by now be satisfied.

But on we go.........I think shes not happy that I do my own postage (Stamps.Com) and she doesn't get credit for it.

To think this comes from the same people who wanted to charge me a $120.00 surcharge to send a 8 pound 4 ounce box to Calf. Sure the box was big 20"x20" square but it wasn't that big.

It seems to me that this seller is cheap. How much can a pattern weigh? I guess it depends upon the pattern, but I would think we are talking just a few ounces. The difference between media rate and first class can't be much. And for the extra few cents with first class the item gets there faster with less chances of damage or getting lost.

PS: This is why the PO's around here require all media mail packages to not be sealed when you bring them to the counter.
