Just had to post this just received note from one of my buyers. I noticed there was an extra 50-cents tacked on to the usual cost of one item, so I looked further...

Here's what she added:

Note:
I included a little extra to help offset Paypal Fees. Thank you!

Just made me smile and thought you might find a ray of sunshine from it.

Hope everyone's 2004 is going as well as can be expected. I'd have to echo some earlier comments here that things seem to have perked up a bit since the rush at holiday time. I hope it continues through the summer months. We're enjoying the heck out of this...

I sold a large framed needlepoint last week that required extra shipping. The bidder requested I ship Priority mail instead of FedEx even though FedEx would have been cheaper. He even asked me to add $5.00 to the total shipping price to cover the special handling.

Don't you just love it when you get a friendly and considerate buyer?? Most of mine have been so far.

Three or four years ago it was a fairly common occurrence for buyers to add a little extra to help offset the cost of the auction. Now it is very rare.

Stonecold, I'm not sure who you are calling a doofus, but I used to get tips from my buyers on a regular basis 3 to 4 years ago. They occasionally overpaid by anywhere from $.50 to 2.50. At first, I thought it was a mistake. But it became apparent after a few more that I was receiving tips, with no note of explanation. I mean, one sale was rock-bottom for $3.50 or so. The person sent a $5.00 bill in cash.

Tips. Heh-heh. Of course, you realize that strictly speaking one is never supposed to tip the business owner, only the hired help.

I return any excess amount paid. I'm too embarrassed to keep it; a deal's a deal. Small amounts are returned as unused first-class postage.

Just today a buyer enclosed an extra dollar to cover PayPal costs. It is so kind of them. Wish we could ask them to do it but I hear that it's not legal.

Yes, Fetish, I know I should add it to my shipping. I don't charge a handling fee but add some for packing materials. I guess I'm just afraid to jack up my low-end items' shipping costs too much. I'm timid about that.

With solid objects, like pottery, I usually guess as closely as I can to the actual shipping and add one pound worth (with priority shipping, that is). So sometimes I make a couple of dollars that way. Hmmmm. I should get more courageous but hate to do that to buyers. I'm just finding, though, that more and more of my low-end items (that is, under $15) are being paid by PayPal, even when I request that they use a check or money order instead.
