Drinking it out of a shot glass, jack? LOLOL!!
I have never heard of 2 Buck Chuck before it was mentioned here, so Googled - and found an interesting article! I believe here it's called "Three Buck Chuck" LOL - Guess I will be out looking for it tomorrow!
June 3, 2003 17:45:02 'Two Buck Chuck' Wine Cult
LOS ANGELES, June 2, 2003
(CBS) It's the California wine with the cult following.
"Charles Shaw is known in local circles as "Two Buck Chuck," said shopper Mercy Malick.
Humble Two Buck Chuck. The $1.99 nectar of the gods that is sinfully cheap and good.
"Better than the box wines we drank in college for the same prices," another shopper told CBS News Correspondent Jerry Bowen.
A full year after flooding the market largely on the west coast, it's still being sold by the case to wine lovers who can't get enough.
"How long can it last? A buck 99 you know? Every time I'm here I go, 'Thank God!' it's here," said another shopper.
Even the New York Times wine critic sees it as a sort of blessing.
"It's okay. It certainly rates as well as any other $2 bottles of wine. Of which there are almost none," said wine critic Frank Prial.
And now, between toasts, "Two Buck Chuck" has become the stuff of urban legend, including the story that an airline that had gone out of business by over-purchasing the wine for its first class passengers.
There's also the story that Charles Shaw is a bighearted billionaire who wanted to expose the proletariat to the finer things in life.
Actually, it's an over-abundance of grapes that's made Charles Shaw cheap to bottle -- an estimated 5 million cases so far. It's easily outselling more famous brands like Mondavi and Gallo in California.
And Charles Shaw?
It's a wine label owned by Fred Franzia, a distant relative on the Gallo family vine. He's a reclusive businessman considered a pain in the neck to California's wine establishment.
Franzia controls scores of brands and labels including Charles Shaw that under-sell the prestige vineyards. And "Two Buck Chuck" is just his latest broadside: "We have others up our sleeve we think are even better coming out."
He also controls more than 30 square miles of California vineyards. And he thinks big. Next he plans to take on invading Australian wine makers.
"We're going to take 'em on. Slap 'em around as hard as we can!" he said.
In the meantime he's trying to make one of those urban legends a reality. Remember the one about the billionaire?
"Interesting legend. We don't have any billionaires around here -- yet," Franzia said with a smile.

You are all SO SILLY!!!
Seriously, Two-Buck-Chuck is pretty darn good wine. My only problem is the case is heavy. The nice man at the store puts it in the trunk and I bring it in six bottles at a time, in my canvas Trader Joe's bag, of course.
Here's a link to Trader Joe's locations. They do have stores in a lot of states.
It's a pretty cool place to shop - lots of neat stuff. Not your average market. If you want Heinz catsup you'll have to brave Albertson's.

OMG!! Here I am sitting & sipping on my "2 buck chiuck" after a great spaghatti dinner. Ya, I buy it by the case!! Sorry, Jack, but I am a merlot drinker, none of that sissy white wine. Lucy, just call me & I will be glad to carry in the case for you!! LOL

Isn't it fun to just sit back & give out with some absolute nonsense?? Once in a while we have to forget about all of the trials & tribulations. LOL

yes it is sanmar and enjoy reading these threads. It breaks up the monotony. I wonder if they sell that in the midwest. No I don't drink but my husband likes a sip of wine now and then. I will have to have him look the next time he goes to the liquor store. Now is that the real name of the wine?

$2 Buck Chuck was just a popular reference to Charles Shaw's $1.99 wine. He never registered the name and the label does not reference that name. A California company, BEVERAGES & MORE, contracted with a different winery and actually produced a wine labeled "Two Buck Chuck". Charles Shaw was not happy and law suits were threatened. Demand for the "Two Buck...." label went through the roof. I bought a case of white and a case of red. LOVE the label....still have the Cabernet. My understanding is that Beverages & More agreed that they were not use the name after the original bottles were sold.

FYI You can only buy "Charles Shaw" wine at Trader Joe's. They have contracted for ALL production for 5 years. In reallity, this is made from surplus grapes from all over CA's wine country. The past two years, there was an over production of wine grapes due to ideal conditions. This may not last as 2003 was not a great year for wine grape growth.
