I see this description all the time but don't know where or what the list is. Is it a book I can buy? A website? A secret club with rites of initiation?
Just another question from me - the uncultured Philistine - and I'm not listed (in the phone book, anyway).

There are a number of reference works listing artists and sometimes price histories. Some you can purchase, some you can use on-line via a subscription, some you can use on a pay-per-inquiry.
If you have an art museum with a library nearby, for the price of admission or a membership you can research there. You can google, or try maineantiquedigest.com for info.
As you surmised, these basically list "professional" artists. Different references may have certain standards for inclusion, but none of them will make any judgement on the artist's work. There are some pretty lame "listed artists". It is sort of like when someone says a dog is AKC registered - bottom line, the only thing it proves is that you have a dog.
If you have a choice between a well done unsigned, or non-listed artist work, and an ugly listed artist work, buy the latter. It will be much easier to resell. "They pay for the name" as they say in the antique business.

Here is a book for ya. A book titled Davenport, Art Reference and Price Guild. If the Artist is known he or she should be in that book.
