If you thought your sell percentage rate was bad its apparent that most catagories are about the same right now. It doesn't matter what you sell the % is about 40% for everyone.

ewora, thanks for posting that. As the other threads on here of late are pointing toward, maybe its the time of the season things are just running a bit dry? Too many items available as AuctionAce posted. But maybe there is a cycle to run through with it?

On OTWA a few days ago they discussed this new function of sell thru rate. Several posters say it in inaccurate due to the lack of BIN purchases that are probably not recorded because they disappear upon purchase.

I'm not certain but thought it was interesting too. It might help answer that newbie question we get here very so often "what should I sell"

Apparently it doesn't really matter.

Just sell what you know.

I have been selling on eBay for two years and a sell through rate of 40% is good in the postcard category!

it is like a bowl of porridge, more sellers are sharing that bowl.
40% sell thru rate is not that bad considered the number of sellers and the number of items some of the sellers have.
it is the final bid amount which is troublesome,it gets lower and lower.

The problem with these statistics is that they are by eBay category - regardless of what is listed. For example, when eBay started out, the "antiques" category listed, shocking as it may seem, actual antiques. Now this category includes new books about antiques, CDs of antique maps, reproduction whatever, etc. So you have now diluted the category, since the items mentioned above are multiples. By that I mean the seller of the antique teapot counts as one listing, since they only have one. The reproduction seller has 126 listed (of which 4 have bids). So if you use this information to talk about price trends, it is skewed.

Just speaking for my small corner of the antiques world.

What I found interesting looking at that chart, is in most all the catagories there was a big nose dive around the 19th of Jan.
Didnt look at other months, but wondering if that is about when buyers get tapped out. lol

I think Jerry just started those sell-thru stats and they should only be for this January so far.

BINs should be in the data. I would think that he is getting the data from closed auction data.
