Any one have any ideas what kind of dog this is? He looks so familiar, but I can't figure it out...even with the AKC website. Is he a terrier mix of some sort? Any idea of what "sorts" might be involved?
Any help at all would be most appreciated!

Definitely a terrier of some sort. Airedale? Check on that; suddenly I'm thinking Airedale.
Someone here who's smarter on this will come up with the answer.

One of the Terrier group or a combination of 2 or more.. Definitely not an Airedale.

It appears to be a Terrier MIX. It's a little too large for a Wirehaired Fox and it doesn't really resemble any other specific AKC Terrier breed.

This is how one person listed their book.
1954. Hard Cover. Ex-School Text. G- A reader from the Developmental Reading Series - a Basic Reading Program. Features Jane and her kitty, Billy and his dog Rex (a wired-hair fox terrier) Ann and a dog named Skip that appears to be a Cocker Spaniel type.

Thanks so much, everyone. I guess it's one of those "artist concept" dogs! In this book, it looks like he moves like an airedale. (He jumps a lot and takes big long playful strides.)
But his color and shape are not quite right.
He's a bit big for a fox terrier -- (sorry I didn't show that in the image), and he has a Schnauzer mouth about him.
Guess I'll put them all in, and let the bidders decide. I wish artists would stick to
specific breeds -- it makes books with dogs in them so much easier to sell.
Forget art and self-expression. I want $$!!
-- just kidding.
Thanks so very much for EVERYONE's help!!

It is the artist's version of a wire hair fox terrier. The legs are a bit longer than they should be. I owned one as a child but it had brown and black patches. Believe they were quite popular in the 1940's due to a series of detective movies that featured Myrna Loy and an actor whose name I cannot recall.

Yes it looks like a wire hair terrior. I wanted one so bad but settled for a dachhound.

If he is a wire hair fox terrier, he's got a really bad haircut and his tail has been cut way too short.
My family raised wirehaired fox terriers and scottish terriers for years, but we never had a fox terrier that looked quite like this one.
I'm a poodle person myself.

NOT a pure-bred wire-haired fox terrier, though it does lool like a mix.
Go ahead and sa it is a Wire-Haired Fox Terrer Mix--I've done well with collectors who buy things depecting mixes of "their" breeds as well
