Hi, you jewelry experts. In the family stuff we've been sorting through--the mountains of it--in the last 9 years, I've finally gotten down to the pre-cambrian! level of a relative's jewelry. It's mostly costume jewelry, although there have been a couple of good pieces, and if family members don't want the costume jewelry, I'll be selling it if I can.

But there's a silver charm bracelet with about 20-25 charms on it, plus 18 extra charms, loose. They are from the 20s to the 60s and reflect a world traveler's tastes. Many cities and countries represented, and interests like a golf bag with 4 little movable clubs in it(attached but moving). Some are marked Sterling or Argenta.

We won't let go of the charm bracelet itself, just the extra charms.

I've heard that charm bracelets are IN right now; I'm about to start looking at how individual charms are doing on Ebay. But I'd appreciate your thoughts and advice.

Charm bracelets are really big right now. Moveable charms are especially popular. I'd give it a go. I have two very, very full bracelets that were my grandmother's. One is 14k white gold and the other is 14k yellow gold. Wouldn't part with them for the world, but I do know they are worth quite a bit of money. I think your charms should do good. Post pics when you can. I have a Sterling bracelet that I could always use more charms for.

Yikes! I just looked at the category--141,000 current auctions??? But I see it's divided into traditional and something called "Italian modular," which means what??? In the traditional area, there are fewer than in the modular, and when I search for "vintage" there are about as many as are usually current in, say, wallpockets--under a thousand. But not all of them sell by any means. I may sell 2 or 3 at a time, if there's a common theme.

Yes, Cheryl, I'll post pictures.

There's one odd charm--a silver screw. I don't know if it's a souvenir of building their first home or a souvenir of (forgive me) their honeymoon. . . .

Over the past 12mos, I've sold three SS charm bracelets -- never get less that $100

Folks love them!

Hi all,

Adele, Do any of the loose charms have a U. S. Navy or Naval Academy motif? I'm trying to add some to a bracelet I have.

Sorry, Lucy--no Navy themes in the charms, alas. I would have given them to you; you've helped me so much!

I've sold several silver charm bracelets and lots of charms and they did well. If the charms are moveable like Cheryl said or harder to find they sell quite well individually. Some I put 2 to 5 to a group such as sports related, hearts, etc.

Adele - Darn it!

Anyway, let me/us know when you list them. Who knows? After all, the bracelet doesn't have to be ALL Navy stuff, right?

The Itlian modular charms are the flat ones that snap into a specially designed bracelet. They were really hot awhile back and have held on to some popularity but I don't see them as being something that will be lasting in the same way that traditional charm bracelets are.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Hi again Adele,

An observation... When I'm looking for charms for the Navy bracelet and I see the seller has other charms for sale I always look at their other listings.

Might be a good idea to do several auctions at one time.

Hi Roadsmith, I just sold a sterling charm bracelet with 13 sterling charms and it only brought $24.99. But don't worry I think I listed it in the wrong category and only about 1/2 the charms were good charms.

You all are SO nice! Thanks for the good advice. I'll post pictures here when I get to it.

It's fun selling collectibles instead of trying to sell the same old widgets over and over. It's very educational, I've found, and sometimes I think I've learned about all I can learn--and here comes another category!
