I keep getting these weird emails, such as -

RE: Question for seller -- Item #XXXXXX

with content sometime about shipping charges. Nothing about any of my auctions, or any other auction I can find.

I do not open them, but read them in a script viewer, as I figure that it is some kind of virus bug, or ebot.

Anyone know any more about them?? I get about 2 to 3 a week, of these strange emails.

Thanks

I think they are Email Harvesters. They send that to you, when you answer asking what they are talking about, they have a good email for spam.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. B. Franklin

What is a script viewer? Probably a dumb question but I'm asking anyway. This is a way to read email without opening???

I've received at least six of these letters that say something along the lines of, "Please add additional shipping fees to send to Nebraska" or something similar. And it's usually relating to a cell phone sale, palm pilot or similar equipment.

Just forward the whole email to [email protected] and don't respond to the sender.

Thanks All

maybedee -

Most email programs have a script viewer built in. With MS Outlook Express, you single click on the email line (but don't open), then right click, then click on Properties, then Details, then Message source.

Yep, these things have been coming for sometime now and they all carry a Trogan Worm/Virus...McAfee catches them for me as soon as they show up and it automatically deletes them.
Heads up on these things!

Some of these that I get open automatically when I try to delete them. I hope that act alone doesn't let them know I am real. I try to have something above and below them and delete all three at once so it doesn't open. I have so many things on my blocked list that it takes 5 or 10 minutes for my email to upload and I still get about 20 junk ones a day. Yes, I have outlook express.

got one of these today [and several last week] ... i forwarded this one to [email protected], along with the detail headers ... here is their reply:

Thank you for writing to eBay regarding the email you received.

We reviewed your report and found that although the message you received
was made to appear as if it had been sent by an eBay user, it was not.
It appears that this email may also contain a keystroke virus. If you
clicked on any of the links in the email, you may have exposed your
computer to this virus.

We are not equipped to determine if your computer is indeed infected
with a virus. If you have not already done so, you should seek out a
virus scanner program to use on your system. I have included a few links
below to get you started in this effort:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/virus/virus.asp
http://vil.mcafee.com/default.asp?
http://www.f-secure.com
http://www.cnet.com
http://securityresponse.symantec.com
http://netsecurity.about.com/b/a/013754.htm

As always, it's a good idea to keep your virus scanner up to date with
the most recent virus definitions. If you do not have a virus scanner,
you can run a free virus scan on your computer at:

http://housecall.antivirus.com

As a security precaution, you should assume that someone could be
watching your keystrokes. You should be careful to not go to any site
that requires a login with password. In addition, we suggest that you
never open any attachment from someone you don't know. You should also
contact your email provider to disable any automatic downloading
settings. It is advised that you only download attachments in a secure
setting where you have the ability to scan for viruses before actually
opening the attachment. Please take this opportunity to learn about and
protect yourself from viruses from some of the websites above.

Once again, thank you for alerting us to the email you received. Your
vigilance helps us ensure that eBay remains a safe and vibrant online
marketplace.
