Has anyone looked at Ebay's announcement to see the changes they're making in mid-April? And do you understand it?

Does it mean we'll have to use SYI if we don't want to use the (joke) pre-filled form?

On other book sites, sellers are saying this is the end of older and antique books on ebay. I'm sitting here looking at a roomful of older books and not enough time between now and mid-April to get them listed and out of here.

The changes don't seem to be much different except that you will have to select your subject from the item specifics list rather than the usual ebay category list. Older books can still be listed easily. You won't have to use a books database like with Amazon or half.

I wonder how that item specifics bit will work. Let's say I have an older book. I have the item specifics windows in front of me and I think fill them in to the best of my ability (and that's a bit IF) and list the book.

In order for a buyer to FIND the book, will he need to fill in item specifics that match the ones I filled in???

Does this mean that there will no longer be any subcategories under books?

That's probably fine as people seem to find mine through Title+Description searches anyway.

I just wish one could enter mutiple publication dates in item specifics. This is really a pain when selling in "lots".

OR

When selling a facsimilie or reprint that is exactly like the first edition, it would be really nice to able to place one date in parenthesis and another outside.
Like this: (1881)1956.

OH WELL....i'm not so sure that item specifics are all that helpful, but we all know eBay knows best.

Since the "item specifics" fields appeared, I have always just filled them in without thinking much about it....

But you have a good point, Roadsmith. Does the bidder have to use those specific words in their title or T+D search to get those results?

Does anyone know how the specifics fields are integrated in the search? At the book sites you can enter information for each field, but how is this helpful with just a title and description search? I've never found anywhere to enter these specifics
as a bidder.

I'm confused (which is nothing new)!

There is a *very* lively discussion about all this on the Ebay booksellers board. Here's one quote:

Contrary to popular belief, ebay does know exactly what it is doing...its just not what you think.

They are not trying to improve sales, they are trying to improve profits.

EBay makes its greatest revenue from listing fees and not FVFs. So if they make you have to list items more than once before they sell then they make more money, especially if you are using frills like gallery and the like.

When everyone says "this will hurt sales" the management at ebay says "see even they agree this was a good idea"

Know thy enemy....

(I'm back, here.) The watchdogs on that discussion site keep knocking off some of the more virulent posts. One, which made it all the way to the top, is now on the bottom.

Honestly! I sometimes feel like a floppy puppet on a string.
