butt from sitting on their a$$ all day long?
I woke up the other day with a pain so bad down my left leg I couldn't walk. I told my daughter and lo and behold the Office manager at the dental office she works at has the same thing. I sat on a heating pad, 1 week, still no better, my heating pad has a vibrator no relief.(no smart remarks) Today I put a pillow on my chair and guess what no pain. Thank goodness. Thanks for listening to my story and maybe if someone else has this problem I might of helped them solve it.

Libra - I don't care how much I love you, there is no way I am just going to let the fact that you spent the day sitting on a warm vibrator go by without comment..... I just want to know if you actually got any work accomplished.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Libra, this is caused by the way you sit, not how long you sit. you are sitting in some way that pinches the nerves to your left leg.
i have the same type of problem but my pain is in the hip and i sometimes have a horrible time standing. they say i sit forward and to the left, pinching off the nerves and blood supply to my hip.
you are supposed to get up and walk around about every 20 minutes or so, just to keep the circulation going.
hope this helps you. i know it can be a real pain.

Libra: I won't comment on the vibrating heating pad (smirk), but at 65 years of age with 45 years of typing and computer work behind me (retired now), I know that you can't sit at the keyboard for hours on end. You have to get up and walk around from time to time. I walk about a mile every morning and use an exercise bike, and that seems to keep me from that type of problem. And I agree that the way you sit might be causing the problem. Check out your chair, too. If you are using a regular straight chair you can't move too much. Take some ibuprofen (eat something with it), and I hope you mend soon.

As stated above, sometimes it can be caused by your chair.
I was having pain in my hip and leg until I changed to a really good quality, comfortable chair. After switching chairs, the pain went away.

Three of my computers are placed at a height so that I can use them while standing up.
A shooting pain down one leg can be sciatica, Libra. You should have that looked at.

Are you crossing your legs or ankles? Doing either can cause pressure on the nerves and therefore, pain.

fluffy is correct - the pain running down your leg is more than likely pressure on the sciatic nerve. This is a fairly common problem particularly with people who already have lower back problems. Putting a firm pillow behind your lower back can help - ibuprofen and heat will also help. However, if this type of problem persists a visit to your physician would be your best bet. Frequent sciatic flare-ups can signal a disc problem.

I had the same problem, went out and bought a newer, better chair, same problem. I then tried a very low footstool (about 4" high) to bring my feet up a bit; and that solved the problem for me as it seemed to take the pressure off. In a pinch you could use a thick book as a 'foot' prop.

Thanks all. I don't use the heating pad when I am on my computer. I use it when I watch TV. I realize now I spend to much time on this thing. My chair is about 3 years old but I am now using a pillow. I will tell you if the pain wasn't so bad I could get up and walk every 20 minutes. Earthmum we are the same age. I worked 45 years mostly walking except for the last 5 I did CT and that was a sitting down job. So I guess I have to rethink my retirement and walk not run around my apartment bldg so that I can get excersize. I appreciate all your help and I hope that things get better. With your support and your answers I know they will.

Sorry to hear about your pains Libra..you can do what I always do ..get up and raid the fridge (LOL from your comment in the image stealing thread)..I too have had some problems with sitting so long in front of this screen..seems a little better now that I use a ream of paper as foot stool and a whole lot cheaper than the $50 ergonomic (or whatever you call it) one I almost bought!
edited because I am already sick of my sig file

Sitting too long can pinch nerves and cut off circulation. I've found that an excellent exercise regimen is to get up every 15 - 20 minutes and go to the refrigerator and get another beer. Also don't overlook Ebay rule #13: The severity of the pain in the butt is directly proportional to the number of NPB's you have in any given week.

Well Libra, I always thought that your were a pain in the butt & you have finally admitted it. LOL I sympatize with you, but I have a pain in the neck & it is from the way I sit looking at the screen I am now taking physical therapy 3X a week. So we have something in common, as I am the "Pain in the Neck". I wonder sometimes if eBay is worth the trials & tribulations.

You know sanmar my husband sometimes says that. I have to admit I didn't sit here all afternoon and went out for a walk. When I sit I have been using a pillow and I also take 2 tylenol a day. Sorry capolady I can't take IBprofin due to stomach problems. Well I have to admit I would rather be a pain in the butr than a pain in the neck either one is really bad and I hope within the week I can walk right again. Thanks to all for your quick response to my medical problem now who do I send the bill to? Don't all holler at once...

I have a roll top desk and antique oak swivel chair on wheels. I love the looks of it but it was hard on the behind. I broke down and invested in a wheel chair cushion for it, and it solved the tushy problem. Now I can sit as long as I want with no problems. They make wheel chair cushions for a reason! People that are stuck sitting in them for a long time suffer horribly if they are not supported by a good cushion. I was looking for a gel cushion and "thought" that is what I bought (I don't even remember the seller now) but when I received it, it wasn't gel. The seller said he would refund it if I sent it back. After sitting on it for two days I didn't want to give it up, although I did suggest he quit advertising them as Gel Cushions. I don't know what this is made out of, but it is awesome!
This says LUMEX cushion. AKROS D.F.D. support system.
I worked in a nursing home and as a home health aide for a while. If you've ever seen someone that has suffered a skin breakdown (decubitis) because of pressure on a skin area you would agree that any amount of $$ to alleviate that is worth it.
So I am living proof it's not the chair but the cushioning. NOTHING will equal a wheelchair cushion as far as I'm concerned. Gel is squishy but heavy. This is some sort of a foam that although it feels like foam, it performs like no foam I've ever seen.
We're worth it...go ahead and find you one. Mine works on an Oak Chair and nothing is harder than that! Here was the "show your desk" thread with my pic http://www.vendio.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=555121

For my rehab I am going to sit in my glider and read or watch TV more and off this thing. There is no reason to be on as long as I am. Now that my eyes are wonderful, my leg is feeling a little better and the weather is going to be good it is time for
me to do other things. Thanks for all your help. lol classicrock

Sanmar, I've got the pain in the neck and shoulders as well as a numb finger from pinched nerves from poor posture at the computer all day--seeing a chiropracter 3X a week to get my spine straighted out and taking lethal doses of ibuprofen. The hidden costs of being self-employed

Yes, and watching your posture as you sit. I also have problems with compression if I lean against an edge too long. I walked off a pinched sciatica, thankfully. Many miles in the local auto part yards, and with my dalmatian. Spent all my spare time for about 10 monthes sitting in a papa-san settee with my feet resting higher than my heart. The parts bring good money, but the Dalmatian is getting old and slowing me down.
