Hi Toasted,

Take a peek at this completed auction. The seller has some info on the Rogers Smith company. Could be your basket is older than 1939.

Might be a bread tray??

P.S. Hi Sanmar!

Some books refer to it as a bread or bun or cake tray.

Here's a silver site I recently found and it has info on Roger Smith & Co

Thanks everyone !! You guy and gals are the best !!

Would you leave it un-polished or would you clean it ? I never know cause some yes and some say no...cause of the patina

Toasted,

Do a search on "Quadrupleplated" -- I think I remember somewhere reading that it was only used through the mid-1800s - so that might help you date the piece as well.

As far as polishing it, I think I would since it looks kinda dull. But gently, gently, gently... And not down in the pattern. Wright's Silver Polish would do a good job without disturbing the patina too much.

JMHO, others may disagree.

toasted, I believe the 1939 is a model number, not year of mfcr. I agree that the "quadruple" plating is 19th century.

I"m with Sanmar on the title--and I would add the word "ornate," too. It's a pretty piece!

ooOOoo added bonus on dating it Thanks Wayne !! I typed rogers smith & co. date quadruple plate at yahoo and got this info
http://www.progconcepts.com/victorian/askrenijan03.html
From what I read Meridan mark stopped in 1886 and the rogers smith & co. mark was from 1880's - 1918 so it should date between 1880-1886 right ?
