I was reading in the thread about 'help me dump my cache', and knew i defragged every couple months, but i had never noticed or knew i needed to click that 'disk cleanup' too ... so i did that this morning, then went back into that part of winXp to see what the 'options' tab was all about ... the part that said 'Remove Optional Windows components that you are not using. - this will remove installed programs that you no longer use' ... that showed me a list of some of my programs, half had a default checkmark in the box, other half didn't,
BUT! I dyslexically read this part!:
<<<< Click the More Options tab, and then under Windows components, click Clean up.
The Windows Components Wizard starts.
In the Components list, click to clear the check box next to the component(s) that you want to remove.
A shaded check box next to a component indicates that only some of its subcomponents are installed.
If you want to remove a subcomponent, click Details, click to clear the check box next to the subcomponent(s) that you want to remove, and then click OK.
Click Next.
In the Completing the Windows Components Wizard page, click Finish.
Click OK, click Yes to proceed with this action, and then click OK." >>>>
in that list was a checkmarked Internet Explorer, and I though "whoa, i don't want them to remove THAT when i click 'finish', so i unchecked it ... NOW i have LOST me big blue E explorer icon from everywhere it used to appear, i did a search for iexplore.exe and that is Gone! .... so i tried a 'system restore' that i found in that area of system tools, and that didn't fix my problem,... [so i undid the 'undo the restore'] ... STILL no way to open my InternetExplorer connection .... i use the internet thru cable modem AOL Broadband for the most part, but I utilize the big Blue E access very often for other auxilliary online work ....
I DID go to microsoft website help boards for windowsXp and posted my dilemma, asking for help with this, and asking for input to [email protected] as well as there, in case i couldn't find my way back ... well, i found my way back, but for some reason, when i click on those messages on the message board, nothing comes up on my screen! ... so I hope someone there will eventually write to that email address too. ... i don't see where anyone has made a message to me on that post yet anyway ... am I up a creek?!
[oh, i think i tried redownloading ie6.0 also, and it didn't 'take' ... i just don't know WHAT to do! ... hellllppp please?

If you were removing windows component programs, you should be able to reverse the process by going to add/remove programs in your Control Panel. It may ask you to insert your Windows disk. IE in on that disk.

yoohoooo Cheryl !!! ... it only took 'your direction', a tiny tad of my limited computer skills, and one Miller, and what... a half hour? ...
I owe ya one ... thanks
marcia/cuyahoga falls ... cold one here for ya! LOL
You're very welcome! I've been using XP since it first came out. It took some getting used to, but I think I've got it down fairly well. I configured my own cable Internet connections and replaced the motherboard. XP is a bit more temperamental than the other Windows versions, but it's also easier to fix!

so sorry I'm out of town therefore not on the computer but you did good. I would of just said roll it back. I have noticed that the restore point isn't automatically loaded every day unless your (my) computer is on at the checkpoint time. I think I noticed that mine is like 5:00 by default.
That is strange that it wouldn't have restored your IE.

Actually, system restore only restores your registry. Once you have removed a program, it's removed. The icons for the program may reappear, but the program itself won't be there. I found that out the hard way.

didn't rollback nicely I guess because that last restore they had was a couple weeks ago ... i thought that would do it, but it didn't .... how do I set up how often I want windows updated automatically, and how do i set that? ...

Go into System Restore and on the left side you will see a link for Settings. You should be able to change it there.

You'd have to have your computer on everyday at 2 a.m. It doesn't really matter what time you set it at as long as it's done at regular intervals and you are sure your computer will be on. You don't even know it's being done.

With XP, you don't have to defrag every week! I haven't defragged in over a month and I still don't need to. XP doesn't jumble things up nearly as much as the other OS's. Also, XP does not come with Scan Disc. It's completely different from 98 and the others. It's far more efficient. I do, however, do a cleanup once a week just to get rid of those pesky files that find there way to my 'puter.
