I was thinking about it today....What is the most seen item at the typical garage sale?

1.Puzzels

I see more puzzles than probably all other items combined. They are 99.9% worthless, I have yet to purchase one...

Clutter, you have a good point, I drive right by them as well. The reason I did not list clothing as the #1 is because it covers such a wide variety of items where a puzzle is a puzzle....

We are going to have a big yard sale this weekend. The most prevalant items we will be selling are things that didn't sell on Ebay

I rarely shop them, but when I do, I always seem to see a popcorn popper. I don't see as many puzzles, and that is one thing I do buy for myself. I think I should put "no clothing or baby items" in my yard sale ad.

Clothes. Old purses. Broken toys. Old computers. Kitchen utensils.

I usually pass clothes dominated garage sales by, but once in a while you find something neat. Once I found an old windbreaker (in good condition) from an old racetrack that had burned down. I bought it for a dollar & turned a pretty penny on eBay with it.

Junk - worn out housewares, plastic storage containers, chipped generic dishes and the like. Lots of clothes we'd toss if they were donated to the thrift where I volunteer.

Almost every one has a bread machine or electric wok, dirty and missing the instructions and/or cord. Which, when donated, also end up in the dumpster.

Dozens and dozens of coffee mugs. Broken toys.

Which is why I seldom stop.

electronic equipment that *almost* works.

dual cassette where only one side works.

VCR that plays but doesn't record or vice versa.

Combination stereo equipment where everything works but the CD player.

I was just thinking the other day that we hadn't had a good "what'd chu git" yard sale thread here lately.

I got last weekend The Perfect Pitch training course cassette tape set for .75 cents which sells for on the net for $139.00. and the lowest price on Ebay last weekend I saw was for about $75.00.

I've gotten a lot pickier about what I'll buy...if it won't bring about a $100.00 I'll pass it by. We bought 2 chandeliers and 2 sconces in a box for $25.00. Sold them all for last week for a total of $372.00 total.

The majority of things I see at garage sales are: Baby clothes, old clothes, BOOKS (I go through those mostly, but rarely get much of any good ones) and exercise equipment.

WHAT IS IT about the exercise equipment?

Nordic tracks used to sell pretty well- but they got soft. Total Gyms ( Chuck and Christie originals, not knockoffs) are still selling well- especially when you buy them at yard sales.

Noone mentioned used crafts, another no seller seen at most sales around here.

Bob: You're right! How could we forget those straw doodads and straw and artificial flower wall doodads and those "adorable" wooden plaques, hearts, circles, wreaths, all with "adorable" slogans painted on them. When I see a table of that stuff, as I drive by, I just keep going because it might mean the folks there have nothing I'd be interested in.

As I posted in another thread, tupperware, plastic toys and dirty and ragged baby clothes. We also have our share of exercise equipment, usually being sold by someone who is about 70 lbs overweight.

That sound activated fish that hangs on the wall and sings Take Me To The River. I have seen SEVERAL this year, along with the Santas that dance and play music, frogs which croak when you go by, etc. I think people get tired of them FAST.

You guys may laugh about the clothes and tupperware, but our biggest garage sale sellers are clothes! At our last garage sale we made $400 off of clothes that nobody has worn for 5 years. Another big seller was tupperware. I got rid of a ton of it (washed the tupperware with baking soda and it looked like new).

Around here, people start arriving about an hour before the garage sale starts (5am)and by 9 or 10 am, most of your stuff is gone. I have had people drive by at 11 am and say things like "what a bunch of junk" and I have replied that they should have been here at 5am with the rest of the buyers, that is why we are done selling and are now cleaning up!

By the way, someone DID want to buy the singing fish right off of the garage wall too!

I am tired of stopping at garage sales only to find prices on broken things way too high and have the seller say things like "if you fix it and sell it on Ebay, you'll make $xx.xx" I always ask them why they don't do that???

One man's trash...

If you stop at a yard/garage sale here, I can just about guarantee you will find Home Interiors stuff, artifical flower arrangements, an assortment of beanie babies and Christmas coffee mugs.

We don't go to garage sales or yard sales any longer, haven't in years, but when we did, the things we found at 99.999% of garage/yard sales, was: items I wouldn't give to the Salvation Army, over priced junk, and baby clothes.

Cups without saucers, and saucers without cups. Stuffed toys, especially one huge one at almost every sale. It amazing me to see people walking away with one!

Wow. I'd forgotten about the dusty flower arrangements and the beanie babies!

Our little town has a huge number of garage sales on Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. The local paper promotes them. It's really hard to get to all of them, but I can't wait to see if I can spot another garage-sale perennial at those.

Old clothes and tupperware - tons of it.
But my husband and I love to go - Sat morning ritual. We have gotten picky but have gotten some wonderful things from Victorian Crystal Chandeliers, $600 Beatle's album for a $1.00. 14 karat Italian Cameo for a quarter and I could just go on and on.
I won't ever stop going.

Old crock pots are a great way to re-oil deep cleaned lether tack. Soak it in olive oil in a crock pot...voila. After even the sweatiest horse wears it you just wipe.

Other Garage Sale to Trash Items: NG magos, Smithsonians, Audebon (sp) and Sunset.
