to the high cost of gasoline? What I am doing is using the paypal service and mailing my packages from home. I am hoping that none of my buyers want insurance and if they do then I have to take the trip and I am limiting my trips to two a week. With the Saudi's news about pumping more oil I sure hope it brings the gas prices down a little, well really a lot, but I doubt it.

Libra, I doubt they will go down much. I have thought about upping the shipping but I dont think buyers understand that's an expense for an ebay seller. some are such whinners about it already...I dont know if I will take that into account.

I am curious, if you ship USPS and utilize a third party to insure the shipping of the item should you, or must you, reveal that fact to the buyer? Does it matter?

You are not required to, but if you do not, and the person pays for insurance and it does not come with the USPS insurance sticker on it, they will be upset.

You might expect them to do things like demand their money back and giving you negative feedback.

you can inform them that UPIC insurance is used and give them the U-PIC insurance number.
i will also write down that number on the box.
There is really not that much savings unless you sign up for a year with them for a fee.
It is good for intl shipment as you dont have to include insured amount on that large customs form

I put a sticker on all my insured packages. No one has ever questioned it or had a problem with it, and it's been five years now.

Libra; if I remember right, you live in MN?? What is the price of unleaded regular there? Out here in CA, the cheapest I have seen is $2.36. Most is over $2.40 & I have seen as high as $2.49.

sanmar originally from Minnesota now living in Wisconsin. I guess the same difference. Our gas is $2.19 a gallon as of yesterday. Staying home is such a bore but saves on the pocket book. Raining Cats and dogs today. I wonder if it will ever stop.

I don't know about you guys, but I try and mail out my items next day...my daily route to work and home passes 2 post offices...in case you are wondering about my gallon of gas price = $1.90 (Virginia Beach)...doesn't factor into my cost at all...as a matter of fact I do not charge for handling...one thing that does upset me as a buyer is when you look at an item starting at .01 and the shipping is $10...you as the seller a question and he/she states: I want to keep my listing fees down, I hope to get ???? for the item...basically listing their item for the shipping charges...anyway, I appreciate the chance to vent for a minute...I also appreciate all who share their experiences!

The last time I filled up my pickup, it took 27.944 gallons (dual tanks) @ 2.399 per gallon. The tab came to $67.04. I'm proud to announce that I have not raised my s/h fee to my customers and I am willing to absorb the entire cost of the additional cost to get the packages to FedEx at the airport which is a 20 mile round trip for me.
However, the temperature here in the San Joaquin Valley is now riding at 90+ degrees and we expect double digits next week. This will increase the necessity of more cold beer to accomodate my customers needs, so it is with regret that I announce that I will have to increase my s/h fees by a buck.

It isn't a factor for me, I ship 3-5 times a week, but the post office is 2 miles away. That's max 20 miles a week. Gas here in Oregon is about $2.30 a gallon, last year it was $1.60, and I get 20 miles to the gallon. It's costing me an extra 14 cents each time I go to the post office. Since I usually ship an average of 50 packages each time, technically I am paying .28 cents more per package sent. Gas would have to hit $30 a gallon, at that point it would cost me 12 cents a package to ship, and I would then add on a quarter to my handling charges.

The post office is on my way to work, so it doesn't cost me anything more in gas to stop and mail things out.

So I didn't raise my s/h charges due to the price of gas. However, I recently decided to give PayPal a try again (I dumped them a couple of years ago because of their questionable business practices at the time), and had to had a bit onto my s/h to cover the additional cost.

However, I've always had my s/h at the bare-bone minimum, and the little I've raised it still has me below what my competitors charge.
