Well Jack, all I can say is that there are some days when you win some, some days when you lose some, and some days when they're called on account of rain. This sounds like one of those days I would recommend you don't buy a lottery ticket.

Last week we rented a Prius for 2 days to test-drive it and we are SOLD. Drove all over Southern Caifornia--mountain roads, city streets, highways, freeways. Averaged 50 MPG. Very comfortable, even with husband's long legs, smooth ride, great read-out screen showing map, MPG, all kinds of stuff. And POWER--we were passing lots of people on the freeways at 75 and 80, and coming up winding mountain roads was no trouble at all, lots of power.

The car was about out of gas at one point so we filled it up - 8.8 gallons.

The battery automatically recharges as you drive. Nothing to plug in or worry about.

We've just put $500 down and ordered a Prius. 10-12 months waiting period. A month ago, when we first looked at a Prius, it was 6-8 months. So. . . we have a wait ahead of us.

Jack, you might want to look into this vehicle, if you're in a car-buying mood.

50 MPG is pathetic for something like that. You can get a Volkwagon Jetta TDI diesel and it will get 55+ MPG.

Jack...If the diesl is red diesel, it was stolen from farmers in the SJV. Red is tax exempt. Both state and federal. Get caught using that stuff on the highway and it's not only grand theft, but tax evasion. It's worth 10 years in Q and another 15 years in Leavenworth plus about half a mil in fines. And they'll bill you for the tax. Don't go near that stuff.

Jack: The Prius is made by Toyota; I don't have a link to show you more details.

We've never owned a truck but were lucky to have friends who did, for the occasional every-other-year hauling we needed. We have a Forester for medium-size hauling and an older Camry, which we're replacing with the Prius. Consumer Reports is our Bible for all our major purchases, and they've never steered us wrong.

I agree with you, though, that a truck can make money for you!
