This was a first and probably only....

Last weekend I went to a yard sale at an estate Los Feliz - an affluent area nearby that is on my usual sale route. These people hired their staff for the day to run their sale while they sat on the porch drinking coffee!

It was rather funny as there really wasn't much stuff so the three hired help were keeping themselves very busy by cleaning and rearranging the items, getting bags for the customers, sweeping up. One hired fellow was in charge of the pricing which thankfully he was keeping in HIS price range.... he sold me 20 pieces of antique Shreve sterling flatware for 5.00! Meanwhile the owners were up there smiling and waving to everyone, very nice. Yes, very nice indeed.

If LA wasn't so far away. When I lived in Santa Barbara, which is only100 miles away, we used to go to estae sales at least once a month.

Reminds me of the estate sale I went to Sunday. They sold me vintage linens for a buck a pound but the old postcards which were worth maybe a nickel they wanted a buck EACH!

Go figure... And these were "pros" running the sale.

You are lucky on that one. I went to a garage sale once at a beautiful water front home here in Michigan, north of Detroit. I was thinking there might be a few bargains there. The house was about 400,000 dollars and the diesel pusher motor-home was about 200,000. What did they sell? There were 2 rather stuffy women selling high price clothing that I didn't bother to look at. The one thing that made me chuckle to me was an old scratched up plastic tumbler that had a 25 cent tag on it. What a bummer.

True Americans do not exclude anybody. They recognize that everyone should have the same rights. Bigotry, intolerance and hatred are cancers of the mind.

skizzi - I literally laughed out loud when I read your post.

Hired help to hold a yard sale - why even bother? Were the owners so lonely they just wanted somebody to wave to?

I know, I'm still laughing myself. It was not an estate sale it was just a plain old yard sale!

The owners were delightful. I asked them if they had anymore things to sell and he went in a dug around for some more stuff. A lovely old cut glass lamp came out along with an old candy dish. He was sweet as pie.

I went back twice that day just because it was so funny. Yep, there were the three helpers, looking for something to do and being exquistely helpful. Turns out they were the gardeners making some extra money on a Sunday. They really had excellent customer service skills and the yard was beautiful besides!

Wish you all could have seen it.

the owners were probably bored and just wanted something "fun" to experience
