Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your computer?

Somehow today (and I don't know if it was email or web browsing) two of the same viruses tried to download onto my computer, within about 6 hours. IESearch.exe. Funny thing is, my Norton is up to date and it didn't catch it, but my AVG free edition did!

Nasty little bugger too!

I'm amazed at the number of programs that try to download themselves to my computer - just by browsing. My firewall catches them all. Viruses are not just in emails anymore. These juveniles are getting smarter and smarter. I used to have Norton. I use Computer Associates' program now and it catches more than my Norton did.

Cheryl, did you know too, just reading these boards cookies and packets are sent to your computer? I saw packets from Tom's tiny url and I didnt even click the link. And cbs.com put a cookie on my computer from somebody posting a picture in the round table - and that was just opening the thread!

I guess there's really no escaping them, but its better than not to know they are there to delete.

I hate the "cookie" thing. I now have mine set to ask if I want to accept the cookie, but that's a royal pain as well. I'm constantly having to click on No. It's such an invasion of privacy. I remember when you didn't have to worry about all of this. Leave it to the advertising community to invade our privacy yet again. Remember when commercials used to be ungodly loud? They outlawed that, thank goodness. We used to have to turn down the TV each time a commercial came on. Now, they want to insert commercial clips right into the programs themselves. An example would be a someone in a show holding a coke and saying "I drink Coke and love it." Could be pretty funny when they come to personal items! "I have to go to the bathroom because it's that time of the month and I only trust Tampax." LOL!

I am a victim of spywear/adwear. I have made some progress by downloading a popup blocker-cookie removal-disk fragment cleanup and several other tricks. Its a little bit better but there is still lots of "Junk" going on with it. For instance.....my ebay (Homepage) can turn into a porn page at any given moment....some of the text in basic web pages or even my auction descriptions have certian words turned into web links, they are even blue in color and underlined

This weekend my computer geek brother is reformatting my hard drive, installing the latest version of Norton and installing adwear/spywear blockers

I will post a progress report early next week
Thanks for asking/caring!!
lol!!

Spybot
JavaCools Spyware Blaster
Adaware
Google toolbar (for pop up blocker)

Even if you just have the first two it will do a LOT to keep this from happening again. I kind of thought that was it was. Although I am surprised that my Norton let through a virus and my free AVG caught the virus thingy. Turns out the virus was something I had downloaded off of Kazaaz but never opened. Housecall picked it up but none of the others did. That's kind of strange because it's been a month or more since I downloaded anything off of Kazaaz.

Really, the format is a good way to go. My gf thinks that you should never reformat but I have an older computer that fills up fast so the only thing I ever miss is my FAV places. I always just love the extra room I always have after that. It's a sure fire way to clean up your computer and have it virus/trojan free.
